Homemade Transforming Optimus Prime Costume
Last Halloween we made a Homemade Transforming Optimus Prime Costume for my son. Unlike most transformer costumes, this one actually transformed! We bought an old Power Wheels body and cut it apart with a heat torch. We kept the nose (hood, fenders and grill together), the cab, and the bed as three full pieces, which we hinged together.
We formed a foam piece into the top of the cab so that the body could rest on my son's shoulders, and also filled a piece of red material into the gap made between the hood and the cab when he stood. He wore a black Batman costume under the truck body, which we added flames to at the sleeves and pant legs.
We also handpainted the flames on the truck body to match Optimus Prime's, and added the Transformers logo to the hood with a plastic bonding paint. We topped it off with smoke stacks made out of painted pipe insulation.
My husband made the mask out of layered foam in the shape of Optimus' helmet, which was nice and light for my son to wear. His candy basket was a box, which we carved into and painted to resemble the All Spark.
The costume folded out to form the full vehicle, with my son hiding inside. Then, when he stood, the nose and the rear hinged down and he turned into the transformer robot. There was also a mic/speaker which made the transformer noises and transformed my son's voice into a transformer voice. My husband took that out of an Optimus Prime helmet my son had.
It didn't work very well in the chaos of kids, but was lots of fun where it was a little quieter. My son, who was four, loved the costume!

Homemade Transforming Optimus Prime Halloween Costume
After watching the movie I was inspired to build my very own transformers costume that can actually transform. It took several attempts and several weeks of collecting cardboard boxes, that I was able to put together a functional costume.
I modeled my costume from the old Optimus prime. I used cardboard of all shapes and thickness for the different parts of the costume... Lots and lots of hot glue... Plaster of Paris, paper towel rolls, Old pair of ski gloves, and cans of black blue silver and red paint. I used Styrofoam for cushion and space fillers inside the costume and some light wood for support.
I guess you can say this costume is made mostly of recycled material... haha a green costume.
Anyway, it turned out great and got a lot of compliments especially when I transformed into the truck and back. Here's a video where you'll see the building process and the actually transform from robot to truck check it...

I was a big fan of Transformers as a kid. One day I saw several boxes in my garage and decided that I could use them to make a Transformers costume.
I took seven of the boxes and cut them into the various shape, using an Optimus Prime picture as a guide. I used duct tape to secure them together. I spray painted it with red, white, and blue colors. I used yellow marker for the belt, and made a stencil of the Transformers Icon and spray painted it on the shoulder of the costume.
Everybody loved it. Everybody wanted to take pictures with me, and I felt like a celebrity. I didn't even know the people in the picture!
The total costume took about 3 days (several hours a day) to make.
Total Cost: $20
