Jack Skellington DIY Costume

My son Trey LOVES the pumpkin king! He has been wanting to do this Jack Skellington DIY costume for years and this was the year! He was very thrilled with the final product...

We picked up a pin-striped suit from Goodwill, which I cut to resemble a tuxedo with tails. I gathered the back and put a placard across it to tighten the front, then we shredded the back and I surged all the edges for stability (all of this was done with fabric cut from the suit, which cost $13 dollars.) Underneath, he wore a plain white t-shirt, and on his feet were his Chucks of course!

His tie was created with felt that was cut from a pattern he drew. I sewed and stuffed the bat. Then after sewing the wings, I ran wire through each of the sections to give them both stability and the ability to form them in different positions. The tie was attached to no-roll white elastic to blend with the white makeup and fastened with heavy-duty Velcro. The eyes and veining on the bat were drawn on with a white paint marker and left to dry overnight.

The big night all that was left to do was his makeup, as he didn't want to wear a mask. The final result looked fabulous! I guess I am a little biased though...

I love the film 'A Nightmare Before Christmas' so I decided to make a homemade Jack Skellington and Sally costume for my boyfriend Roger and myself.

For Roger's homemade Jack Skellington costume we painted stripes onto an old suit jacket and trousers, I made the bat dickie bow using wire bent into the shape of bat wings, I then covered it in leather and painted the details on it. For his Jack head we used a white swimming cap to cover his hair and I painted his Jack face using face paints. We also used a pair of Skellington gloves as hands.

For my homemade Sally costume I got a white t-shirt and lots of white fabric and painted the same designs from Sally's dress onto the fabric. I then sewed the pieces together to create the patchwork dress. For my arms and legs I drew stitching onto a long sleeved t-shirt and white socks with a permanent marker. My wig was black and sprayed with red hairspray and I painted my face white with stitching details and big rag doll eyelashes. We got so many compliments on the night and many of our friends didn't recognize us!

Jack's head was created by using a plastic bounce ball covered in paper mache, then when it was dry I popped the ball and pulled it out. His bow tie was made with wire to make the long wings; which I covered in fabric. The Styrofoam was molded into a bats head. I also used white paint to paint white stripes on the wings on the bow tie.

I used black poster paint to paint his face on the paper mache ball. I sculpted a face on the ball to give it character. Then I used black fabric to make his suit, and I used white poster paint to make the print for the pin stripes on the suit. I traced and cut out purple fabric patterns for his bony hands, sewed them together to make them into gloves, and added wire for his fingers to stay stiff and not to bend. Then I stuffed them to make his fingers look longer. I also painted them to make them look bony.

Hope you like my Jack Skellington Costume!
