Coolest Homemade Sgt. Floyd Pepper Costume 16

Homemade Sgt. Floyd Pepper Costume

Homemade Sgt. Floyd Pepper Costume

I am a HUGE Muppets fan, and never seem to like the store-bought costumes. So I decided to make my own Sgt Floyd Pepper costume.

Using lots of floral wire and yarn, I built this mask. I wrapped yarn around a THICK piece of floral wire and super-glued it at both ends (a GEL super glue sticks forever and dries almost instantly!) I then used this piece as a "frame" for the beard.

Next I carved the nose out of Styrofoam, covered it in paper mache and painted it. I glued the nose onto a pair of over sized costume sunglasses. I then attached the wire beard frame to the glasses. Tying cut strips of yarn to hang off the frame, I unraveled all of the yarn to make it lighter, fluffier and more hair-like. This took a lot of time, but the result was worth it!

The costume uses a pattern for a civil war officer that is modified slightly to look more like the Beatles' Sgt Pepper costumes. I cut the shoulder pieces out of cardboard and covered them in fabric, finally adding the fringe to it, AGAIN USING SUPERGLUE GEL. The mustache is made from thinner floral wire, again with yarn wrapped around and a longer piece of yarn unraveled, hanging off the ends.

Homemade Nanny from The Muppet Babies Couple Costume

I've always admired the character "Nanny" from "The Muppet Babies". She was the wise character with the striped stockings who always came in to snap those Muppet babies back to reality. The best part about her was you never were permitted to see above her knee. So mysterious and stoic.

This year I convinced my buddy to be the other leg. I made both costumes with green, white and purple fabric, about 50 hot glue sticks and the shoes are made of thick yoga mats that I cut up. I also purchased a cheap shoe and cut it up for a pattern. I drew an enlargement and patterned it on the yoga foam. It took about 2 weeks and six hot glue burns to complete the costumes but it certainly did not disappoint! It was also quite the commitment because those costumes were pretty hot to be in all night.

If I had to do anything differently on this Homemade Nanny from The Muppet Babies Couple Costume, I think I would have installed a fan at the top of the sock so we have some kind of built in cooling system. It was so worth it though!

Coolest Muppets Halloween Costume 5

Snowth, Mahna Mahna, Snowth

Snowth, Mahna Mahna, Snowth

While strolling through the Jim Henson exhibit at the Smithsonian, my two friends and I decided we needed a Muppets Halloween costume. And not just any Muppets, but the best Muppet's ever: the Mahna Mahna Muppets. They are also known as Mahna Mahna and the Snowths.

For the Snowths we made the heads out of foam and flannel bought at a fabric store, and a hot glue gun. Their eyes are Styrofoam balls with felt glue-gunned on. The dresses we made out of the only pink fur we could find, and finished it off with some pink socks on our arms, pink tights, and a boa.

For Mahna Mahna we got an orange wig, cut up another hat that had orange hair attached to make the orange beard, made a big pink nose out of Styrofoam, and made a green dress out of some green fabric.

Not everyone knew who we were, but for those who did, it was so worth it!

Those are great costumes! My husband directed me to your site. Your costumes are the most realistic ones he's found online. He wants me to make the costumes. Can you provide more detail on making the heads? Perhaps patterns or approximate dimensions?

I'm making a similar costume this year (puppets for the Snowths though). Did you use orange clown wigs for the hair and beard, or something different? Thanks!

Coolest Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem Band Group Costume

Coolest Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem Band Group Costume

Coolest Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem Band Group Costume

This Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem Band Group Costume was a blast. We started by putting plastic bags over two ski-doo helmets and two large balloons. We paper-mached over them a few times to make them strong. Then applied various ridges etc. and continued to paper- mache over and over again til the forming was right.

Drying time was very long for these, at least 24 hours between coats. After drying was complete, we cut-off the helmets and balloons. Face holes were covered with a sheer fabric. Material was glued on and the accessories added. Feather boas worked wonders.

All clothes were from Value Village etc. The instruments were all layers of cardboard, cut and painted or covered with material... The sax was a long slender balloon and a beer cup covered with foil.
