For this homemade Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head Halloween costume idea I used:

* Floor underlay (for potato shape)
* Foam Sheets of various colors
* Brown Acrylic paint for body
* Super glue to stick on face features
* Duct tape to hold front and back of costume together
* A bowl with black tights for Mr. Potato's Hat
* Styrofoam ball for Mrs. Potato head earrings
* White long sleeve top
* Black Leggings
* White gloves (sewed on black foam for Disney look)
* Hair clip to stick to flower for Mrs. Potatoe head

2 Costumes from the shop wold have cost $130, I made the whole look for just $35! It took me about 4 hours to make both costumes.

Steps:

1. First I cut out about a 2m piece of underlay for each costume
2. Then I cut holes for my head to go through the middle
3. I marked out the shape of the potato and cut it out
4. Next I painted both suits with brown acrylic paint
5. Then I cut out all the various facial pieces (Eyes, Eyebrows, Lips, Nose, Mustache, Flower)
6. Cut styrofoam ball in half and painted it yellow
7. After everything was dry I then stuck on all the facial features
8. I covered a bowl with black tights, cut off the legs and sewed it at the top.
9. I stuck hair clip to flower using Duct tape
10. I stuck black foam strips to gloves
11. I then stuck the front and back of the costume together using Duct tape from the inside.

Then all that was left to do was put on the clothes and costume and the look was complete!

Homemade Potato Head Costumes

Homemade Potato Head Costumes

We always dress up as a family with a theme on Halloween and it's always a secret. Last year we chose the Potato Heads. It was a great idea and fairly simple as long as you allow enough time to complete the details. Because our heads were covered, people had to guess who we were! It was awesome!!

The Homemade Potato Head Costumes were made out of fleece (I lined it and stuffed with plastic grocery bags and stuffing so we could move freely). Features that weren't fleece were cotton (stuffed for 3 dimension)and extra material I had from other projects. Hats were paper mache' and took the most time but were definitely worth it! They covered our faces. We cut slits and covered them with netting so we could see. Adult gloves were homemade as well. Purse and earrings were foam.

We were a hit everywhere we went and people couldn't get over how real everything looked.

Hat Help!
by: Heather

Can you please tell me what and how exactly you paper machie the Mrs. potato head?

Mrs. Potato head hat

I remember this being challenging. We did a regular hat shape like the others with an big "punch ball" balloon from the $1 store, then attached cardboard/poster board for the brim. We did it in stages to help with the sturdiness. Then added the foam flower for decoration.

We cut the slender rectangle shape for the eyes so we could all see and hot glued same color netting. It worked well, we could see out but people couldn't see in.

Great costumes. Would you please tell me how you made your pattern for the potato costumes please.

Sorry, I didn't have a pattern. I just estimated an egg shape for each family member, allowing room for stuffing in the lining.

Hat Problems

I love the purple hat with the flower but I cannot figure out how to make the brim. Could you explain how you did it?

Having seen pictures of Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head DIY costumes on this site, I decided to give it a try. I used about 2 1/2 yards brown felt for the bodies and various colored felt squares for the parts. I sewed the top and sides of the bodies and then used Velcro to secure the eyes, nose, and mouth.

For the body parts, I sewed them leaving a small area open to add some stuffing and then used a hot glue gun to close the opening. The pupils and lashes on the eyes were secured with glue. I purchased Mr. Potato Head's black hat at Walmart and found Mrs. Potato Head's red hat at a local resale shop.

Underneath, Mr. wore black pajama pants and a long sleeve t-shirt. Mrs. wore black tights and a long sleeve t-shirt. The hands were purchased online from a costume store. Everyone at the party thought they were fun and creative!

Homemade Do it Yourself Mr and Mrs Potato Head Halloween Costumes

My mom made these adorable Mr.and Mrs. Potato Head costumes for my daughters. She made the eyes out of black mesh so they could see and the rest of the face is made out of felt. She spray painted on the brown fabric to give it a more "potato" look. She used batting to make it a little round and then lined it. She made gloves and shoes to complete the look.

She received tons of compliments on the Do it Yourself Mr and Mrs Potato Head Halloween Costumes and the girls loved them!

Hello,

Great Costumes! Did your mom make the shoes or did you get them somewhere.

Thanks!

I am over enthusiastic when it comes to costumes and your potato heads are excellent. Is there any way your mother would share more detail on how she did it?
