Homemade Mr. & Mrs. Potato Head Costumes
Our Mr. & Mrs. Potato Head costumes were made out of felt, with stiff batting inside and Velcro at the shoulders. We added elastic at the bottom to give it more of a potato look.
Having no pattern, we just drew shapes for the eyes, nose, mustache, teeth, lips and ears. The eyes, nose, mustache, lips and teeth are made out of cotton material, satin and felt which we stuffed with fiber fill. They were attached to the potato with Velcro, clear thread and safety pins. We made the eyebrows out of felt with adhesive backing. The eyelashes were made out of pipe cleaners that were hot-glued on. The ears were also made out of felt; we inserted some stiff batting, filled the edge a little with fiber fill and hand sewed them.
Mr. Potato Head’s hat was made out of a mop bucket and a sunscreen for the car window. It was covered with black material and a ribbon at the bottom. A hole was cut out where the wearer's eyes would be and some see through matching material or tulle was glued on the inside.
The pattern for Mrs. Potato Head’s hat was also drawn to the correct size to go over the head. The hat was made out of stiff batting and material which was hand sewn. A hole was also cut out for the wearer's eyes and pink matching tulle was hot-glued on the inside. A flower and ribbon were attached to finish it off.
We purchased white long sleeve shirts, white leggings and over sized clown gloves. Our over sized slippers were purchased online. We had a lot of fun making these costumes and it took a while to finish.
For Halloween I wanted to create a costume that would be unique and interactive. Thinking back to my favorite childhood toys a Mrs. Potato Head costume seemed like the perfect idea! After digging up my old figurine the costume took about 2 hours to make.
The inside structure is a pop up laundry hamper and then covered with a queen size tan sheet. To create the “potato” look I stuffed the inside with pillow stuffing and duck tapped the sheet inside to make sure the stuffing didn’t fall out throughout the night.
The parts are made out of Styrofoam and then covered with fabric. The eyes are my favorite as I think they make the costume come to life. The extra long eyelashes are made from pipe cleaners. I then attached the parts with Velcro which allowed them to get moved throughout the night. No parts were lost throughout the Halloween celebration.

Mr and Mrs Potato Head Couple DIY Halloween Costume
Our Mr and Mrs Potato Head couple DIY Halloween costumes are made out of cotton fabric. I did an inner shell and outer shell and stuffed in between. When you are measuring add at least 3-5 inches to make sure you are comfortable for the inner shell and then add another 3-5 inches on the outer shell to account for the stuffing.
The arms and legs have elastic around the wrists. Make them quite a bit bigger than what your wrists/ankles are so that they aren't tight, the shoulders are Velcroed for easy access to get in and out. The faces are made with foam. The ears are made with felt and to shape - pipe cleaners. They are hot glued on. The hats are made with bristol board and foam for accessories on there. Mrs Potato Head also has a bracelet and earrings and a foam purse. We wore slippers.
This DIY Little Bo Peep Halloween Costume was VERY simple to make! All we used for the body was panels of cut cardboard (4 in a potato-like shape and 4 for the side panels) and various colors of felt for the body details. We wore white long sleeve shirts and bought two cheap pairs of cartoons gloves for a little extra fun.
Since we modeled them after the Toy Story couple, we gave them separated eyes with eyelids and facial expressions. They were definitely the hit of the weekend – we even won a Caribbean vacation for our efforts!
