MAMA MIA!!Growing up I had always enjoyed playing Super Mario Brothers (and still do enjoy playing it). This Halloween I just couldn't resist the idea of trying to transform a common male costume into a unique female costume. I asked a few of my friends if they would like to join in on the "Mario Party", if you will. We decided on creating Mario, Luigi, and Mario costumes.
For the hats, we simply went to the Dollar store, bought some hats, spray paint, and foamy sheets. We spray painted our appropriate colors on our hats and then cut out circles from the foamy sheets. We then wrote our "M", "L", & "W" with permanent marker onto the foamy circles and glues them on the hats. Next, we went to a local bargain store and purchased children's jeans. My friend is pretty amazing at working a sewing machine so she sewed our children's jeans into high waist-ed jean skirts to get the Mario brother jean overall effect with a unique fashionable twist.
Lastly, we purchased extremely cheap long sleeved red, green and yellow shirts from Forever 21 and some cheap suspenders. The total cost for this Homemade Mario Brothers Halloween Costume Idea was approximately 15-20 dollars! Not Bad! The costumes were a huge success!
When my son was 3 years old he was very into Mario & Luigi. So he wanted to be Mario for Halloween. So I went on the hunt to create a homemade Mario for him. Then he told us he wanted his dad to be Luigi cause he was the taller one.
:-) This year there was no premade Mario & Luigis, so we created our own homemade Mario and Luigi costume.
Mario: Found a pair of overalls at a thrift store in his size. He already owned a red long sleeve shirt. Bought a pair of red sneakers from WalMart. Got white gloves from the Dollar Store. Purchased his hat from our local Embroidery shop in the mall. Who also embroidered the M on it for us.
Luigi: Bought a pair of overalls in my husbands size from WalMart.com. Bought the green long sleeve shirt from a thrift store. My husband wore white sneakers. Gloves from Dollar Store. Purchased his hat from our local Embroidery shop in the mall. Who also embroidered the L on it for us.
The most pricey item in the whole thing was my husbands overalls.
So, after being frustrated by not being able to find a green or red hat anywhere in our college town, I decided to make my own. The structure of the hat is made with yellow poster board, and then covered in construction paper. Lastly I added the letter emblem to the hats (this hat making process was easier said then done.)
I then cut up and old pair of leggings to create the suspenders. I added the yellow circle to the suspenders (also cut from the yellow poster board). Lastly we wore red and green tank tops underneath, and it all tied together! What makes this Mario Brothers Couple Costume interesting is that it was completely homemade, INCLUDING the hats!
Me and my friend didn't want to have to go in overalls all night so we went to Silviana in the mall and got the shirts which are just red and green long sleeves. The skirts we got on sale at Wetseal but Charlotterusse carries some and so does Silviana. We got the white gloves from Walmart and were just wearing Keds for shoes! We borrowed the hats from a friend but Walmart also had just plain green and red hats!
Hope this helped you in making your own Homemade Mario and Luigi Costume.
