My 10 month old, Riley, is always roaring and pouncing, so we decided to make him a lion for his first Halloween. I thought about buying a costume but I couldn't find anything I really liked for a decent price. I, therefore, set to making this homemade Lion costume.
The costume was made using fabric from an old thrift store sweater and pair of corduroy pants. For the body I used one of Riley's onesies as a pattern, cut up the sweater and resewed. The body was fairly quick but the mane took hours. I cut the loops out from the corduroy pants and hand stitched them in layers to a hood, also made from the sweater.
For the tail, I cut out and sewed a long tube from the sweater, filled it with poly-fil from an old pillow and made the tuft at the end from the corduroy pants as well, only with smaller loops.
This was my first costume attempt, and i think it turned out really well. We got tons of compliments when trick or treating and, best of all, it only cost about $5 to make, and all out of recycled materials!

I go to the University of Winchester in the UK and for one night out my class decided to make the theme- circus. I knew that most people would turn up as clowns and I wanted to be something different so I decided to go in a Homemade Lion Costume.
I'm a poor student so I need to be resourceful. I decided to wear an Afro wig that I already had at home as the lion's mane but I back combed it even more to make it more wild looking. I bought a really cheap brownish t-shirt dress that I cut the sleeves off of and wore as cuffs so I looked a bit eaten and torn up. I wore it with brown leggings and brown boots and smothered myself in a orangy brown body paint.
The face paint was pretty easy to do, you just need black white and the orangey brown colour. The tail was a fluffy bit of material I found in a fabric shop that I pinned to my dress.
I really wanted this adorable lion costume for my sons first Halloween. However there was absolutely no way I was paying $100 for it. I looked at the costume for weeks before I decided to just go for it and make my own homemade lion costume.
I bought fleece and fake fur fabrics from the store and then I went to work. I sewed for 3 weeks during nap time and every other spare moment I could find with an 8 month old getting into everything. This is what I finally came up with. He was adorable!
This Homemade Lion Costume is a simple PJ pattern out of fake fur for the body. Loops of polar fleece attached to a detachable collar fill out the mane. More polar fleece loops attached around the ears for the main mane.
A long tail with bells and a bow fill out the costume – that’s the fun part when knocking on doors is too scary.
