Homemade Lady Gaga MTV Video Music Awards 2009 Costume
I created this Homemade Lady Gaga MTV Video Music Awards 2009 Costume by hand after being inspired by the 2009 MTV video music awards performance of Paparazzi by Lady Gaga. It was really impressive to see a performer that did more than a song and dance, but instead told a story. To me, it was a 3 minute theater performance. That may seem over the top but it made me realize the lack of innovation in current music scene and performance.
Gaga is bringing back a movement that encourages creativity and performance art to enhance the music. Many people have attempted Lady Gaga’s fantastical looks. In fact, Lady Gaga was one of the most popular costumes this year. Having said that, I think I really took it to a whole new level. I did my best to perfect almost every inch of the costume. I spent over a month toiling away. Everything you see is completely hand-crafted. I have sewn, hot-glued, and dyed all the intricate pieces onto a one of a kind costume.
Hope you enjoy.

There was a Lady Gaga themed party and instead of dressing up like her, I wanted to mimic a certain costume. I replicated her bubble costume.
I purchased a black leotard from Joyce Leslie and bought a package of 50 opaque balloons. I blew up the balloons ranging in size and pinned them with safety pins to the leotard. So that you wouldn't see the pins, I started the pins from the inside of the garment. I made the homemade Lady Gaga costume the night before because the balloons will deflate otherwise.
It took about two hours to complete. I teased my hair and copied her star eye makeup. I wore black tights and pumps too. The only thing that I had a problem with was buttoning the leotard! It was almost impossible to reach over all of the balloons to button it, so I needed someone to do it for me.
The other problem I had was that people wanted to pop my balloons all night!! The Lady Gaga costume cost about $25 to make!
I love Lady Gaga and her crazy fashion so I wanted to make the best Lady Gaga costume ever. I took the idea for my costume by mixing accessories from her Poker Face album cover, the disco bracelet, gloves, and disco mask with the bubble outfit that she wears in her Cherry Tree Sessions live performance of Poker Face.
I made the bubble dress by sewing do it yourself empty Christmas ornaments to a nude leotard. I made the disco mask by taking mirror paper and gluing to a blank mask in the exact design as her original mask. Her infamous disco stick I replicated by taking two plastic cups and gluing crystal dazzlers onto them. Then I put an electric glow stick inside it and taped it around a black stick that was a witch broom.
I worked making this Homemade Lady Gaga Bubbles Costume for over a month ordering supplies, and then spent hours sewing and gluing to put it all together.

I came up with the Homemade Lady Gaga Costume after watching the video "Just Dance". I love that song! I bought a blonde wig, fake eye lashes, and a zebra dress. I painted a blue lightning bolt with eyeshadow and eyeliner.
I also made a rhinestone microphone (not pictured). I think this came out great with minimal materials. So I can "just dance" to my Halloween party!
