I told my wife I wanted to a Homemade Gene Simmons Halloween Costume and nothing else. Searched internet for costumes to purchase, found them way too expensive. My wife thought she would be able to make the costume and so we set out to purchase fake leather looking stuff.
We purchased the boots and studded leather gloves, the rest was created out of a 7x5 sheet of fake leather. We had to paint the inside of the wings as it came in white but you cant tell.
The make up took several attempts to reach perfection. This picture was one of the first trials but not bad. Practice does make perfect. The black wig we already owned, just had to tease it up a bit.
The metal work on the knees, cod piece and wings is various types of hardware, silver grommets and Acorn nuts. Steel chains attach the two wings around my back. Weighs about 20 pounds when all together.
Went to a party on the 24th. Never been such the focus of attention in my life. Sooooo many pictures with random people in random costumes. Truly a great night.
Total cost: around $150.00 plus about 8 hours of total labor. End result, priceless.
I have always had a fascination with KISS costumes, but the authentic ones are SUPER expensive…and I never had enough people to join me. This year, I was able to convince my husband and another couple that we are friends with to go along with the idea, Homemade KISS Group Costume. The best part about piecing the costumes together was the thrift store shopping.
From my husband’s (Ace Frehley) red ski boots to our friend Matt’s (Gene Simmons) second-hand sports shop shoulder pads, everything that we collected was able to be jazzed up with silver spray paint, Christmas ribbon and LOTS of sequins, puff paint and glitter. Several hours each night for a couple of weeks went into completing each character's detailed look. Oh, and did I mentioned the use of the guys' high school jock straps?? Gross, but GENIUS!
The makeup took several hours to perfect that night, but once we all got together, the KISS magic filled the room! We definitely rock ‘n rolled ALL night!

My son's wanted to be KISS members. For Ace, I found a girl's stretchy black shirt and leggings, which I studded with rhinestones. I sewed some belts out of silver quilted batting that I ordered from a fabric company on-line. I also made leg warmers to look like the boots were actually taller. The arm bands were also made of the quilted fabric. I only ordered one yard, but could have used a little more. The boots were found at a resale shop and painted silver.
Finally, the trademark wig and makeup completed the look. I bought clown white face makeup, black eyeliner, silver and blue eyeshadow and black lipstick. I also painted my son's nails black.
The blow up guitar is the perfect accessory. I found it at a party store. The kids had fun channeling their inner rockstar.
They received so much attention from this Homemade Ace Frehley from KISS Costume.
This Homemade Gene Simmons KISS Costume is my friend Andrea. Yes actually it is a girl under all of that drag. In her costume she's 7ft tall and even glued hair to her chest to make the outfit complete.
