Homemade King Kong and the Empire State Building Costume

Homemade King Kong and the Empire State Building Costume

This is a photo of my husband Todd as the Empire State Building and my son Max as King Kong. My husband dreamed up this idea of a Homemade King Kong and the Empire State Building Costume while we were pregnant with Max. He told everyone how he was going to be the Empire State Building for Halloween and Max would be King Kong.

So, of course, mommy had to make dreams come true! This is my husband's dream costume. I made the Empire State Building out of cardboard boxes, shoeboxes, a contact cleaning solution box and a toothpaste box. I pulled a lot of pictures of the Empire State Building off of Google for reference. I spray painted it with silver paint.

There was also a lot of glue involved. On the very top of the costume is a pencil, just like the antennae on the real Empire State Building, but you can't see it in this photo. I used black construction paper and black electrical tape for windows on the building and on the shirt. We had fun making this costume and I wish Halloween was more than just one day so we could show it off more!

I really wanted to do a costume that included my newborn son. I always called him a monkey, so when I was looking for monkey suits online, I couldn't find one that I wanted. I then came up with the idea as him being King Kong! I thought, if he was King Kong, then I could be a skyscraper!... and so I created this homemade King Kong and skyscraper couple costume.

I bought fabric for my costume, using a beige color for the actual building. I made windows all over the building, using black and yellow fabric (this made it look like lights were on and off). I made a hat out of poster board, which represented the very top of the skyscraper.

I then made the gorilla costume for my son. I sewed a barbie doll to his sleeve, so it looked like he was carrying a "damsel in distress." By me holding him, it looked like King Kong was climbing up the skyscraper!!

Homemade King Kong Scaling Empire State Building Halloween Costume Idea

For this homemade King Kong Scaling Empire State Building Halloween costume idea we took a large cardboard box and cut it down to shape it into the Empire state building, we cut an opening in the back for my daughter to get in easily and attached fishing line to help hold the box up. We bought a gorilla mask for the face, used black gloves, black sweatshirt and pants and a second pair of black sweats that we stuffed and added black gloves to for the feet and attached to the box to make it look like King Kong was halfway up the building.

We painted windows on the box and attached a toy plane to make it look like the plane was attacking King Kong and we gave her a barbie doll to hold and wave around. It was somewhat awkward going up stairs, but the compliments and extra candy were well worth it.
