The idea for these Homemade California Gurls Candy Costumes came from the "California Gurls" music video by the artist Katy Perry. My friends and I all wanted to be Katy Perry for Halloween because we love her style, so we created our own versions of the characters from the music video. All of the costumes were created by us.
How to for the dress: I re-used a dress from a previous Halloween. I bought my materials at a craft store which consisted of the following: 2 real swirly lollipops for the torso, 2 fake swirly lollipops for each breast (purple & pink on sticks with ribbon), assorted cupcake patches made out of felt, and real smarties candies with the wrapping. I placed all the pieces randomly on the body of the dress. First, I glued the back of each piece to the dress, then I sewed each of those pieces securely on to the dress. (Note* you can arrange the pieces however you like.) I had to double-sew because I didn't want any of the candy falling off in case people accidently pulled them.
How to for the headpiece: The cupcake headband was a creative idea I thought of to add to the costume. I ordered an artificial cupcake from a crafts seller on ebay. Next, I took an old headband which I then used glue and Velcro to keep the cupcake secured on it. It worked perfectly!
I wore a light purple wig, a pair of pink sheer stockings, and blue heels for the finishing touch.
Well, when I saw the video I knew that I needed to create a costume like that, so I started to make it by myself and this is the result.
Here's a small list of the stuff I used to create this Coolest Katy Perry (California Gurls) Costume:
* Big Bonbons - Satin and foam. * Ice Cream - Foam, Eva foam, satin, scintillating ink, glue and glitter. * Cup Cake - Eva foam, satin and scintillating ink. * Cane Sugar - Fabric and ink. * White Part of Dress - Ink to do the candy sprinkles. * Hard-Candies - Eva foam and satin for the necklace and on the dress. * All other Candy - Cold porcelain for lollipop, gum, chocolate crack, jujube, confetti, brigadier, coconut, kisses, marshmallow, pudding, Popsicle, a cherry. * Hot glue to paste the candy on the dress. * White sand to make sugar effect at some candies. * Four donuts that even smell like donuts (I bought these ones).
I didn't get the perfect wig, but I guess it's not a problem. Hope you like my Katy Perry (California Gurls) Costume. =)
This Homemade Katy Perry Costume took many hours to make! It started with a white tank top, fabric, candy, Styrofoam and glitter. I made everything, or fixed things that I bought! I cut the tank top in the back and inserted wire and eyelets to make a lace up corset back.
Almost all of the candy is real. The ice cream and cupcake I made from extra material from the skirt and lots of glitter. Every sprinkle was glued on one by one all over the costume. The "cherries" are fireball candies, the necklace is all real candy! The candy cane is pipe cleaners wrapped with ribbon. The tights were white and I had to dye them pink, and the shoes where plain white but I added bows. The wig needed to be straightened and most of the hair was cut out of it to make it less poofy. The skirt was made from scratch and sewed by me.
I always make my own costumes as I don't like spending too much money on something I will wear once, and this one was no different. After lots of looking online I saw that no-one had copied the bikini top and that got me thinking.
I got my nan to help me knit the buns, I then sewed them onto an old bikini top, the shorts I already owned and were years old. And bought a cheap blue wig from the internet and made sure it looked similar.
I got lots of compliments on my homemade Kate Perry costume and it was so much fun when the song came on at the party.
