Homemade Lucy and Ethel in the Candy Factory Couple Costume Idea
To make this homemade Lucy and Ethel in the Candy Factory couple costume idea we started with a pattern for a lab coat. The lab coat ended up a bit boxier than we thought, but with the drawstring it was ok.
We used a black fabric to create the collar and sleeve cuffs. We actually sewed up the front and added the black buttons just for effect. I then cut out a felt heart and embroidered I love Lucy onto it and sewed it on the collar. I made chef hats and Ethel used a blond mullet wig and rolled up the back into a knot. Lucy just sprayed her hair orange.
We used foam board and wrapped it in tin foil, then put a piece of wax paper across the board to create the look of the conveyor belt. We glued on chocolate covered cherries in a line and a bunch piled up then wrapped a couple on the other side and glued down a stack of wrappers. We then attached fishing ling to the corners and hung the boards over our shoulders.

Homemade Little I Love Lucy and Ricky Homemade Costumes
This is my two year old daughter Leila Jayde and her cousin Christian in their Homemade Little I Love Lucy and Ricky Homemade Costumes last Halloween. Me and my mother made the Lucy costume. Everything is homemade except for a few parts of the dress and the jewelry.
I like to incorporate her naturally curly red hair into her Halloween costumes. Last year she was Pebbles Flintstone.
We bought the dress at a resale shop. It was supposed to be a Minnie Mouse costume from the Disney store, but we made several changes to make it look like a 50's style dress. I made the apron by hand and the "I Love Lucy" heart was made with a piece of felt and white fabric paint.
I used a razor to cut the big white bow off the front of the dress and hot glued a hair clip to it to make the "Lucy" bow.
The idea to add Ricky was last minute so we had to dress him in his old Easter outfit. Good thing it still fit!

Lucy’s outfit is an old black strapless 50’s style dress and I put a black cap sleeve t-shirt underneath. I had a polka-dot and eyelet apron in my closet and it worked great. I also bought a pair of polka dot heels for $10 off a small mall store clearance rack.
I looked at pictures of Lucy’s hair online and styled mine accordingly and used hair spray paint from the party store, but make sure you have to have someone help you spray it on. Of course red lipstick and a mischievous look always help (by the way, don’t expect the hair paint to wash out right away; mine was pink for a couple days). My Ricky wore an old suit he borrowed from a cousin and carried around some bongos.
It cost $10 for the shoes and $3 for the hair paint. It took hardly any time to put together, but the hair took at least 1.5 hours.
After much antique shopping and crafting at home, our vision was realized for our Ricky and Lucy Ricardo Couple Costumes! Ricky pulled an old skinny tie out of his closet and Lucy found a polka dot dress on eBay. The hoop skirt underneath came from a vintage shop.
We found the apron at an antique shop and pinned on the "I Love Lucy" logo. The bongos also came from an antique shop, we drilled holes in the sides and connected them to a belt from Goodwill. We printed out a label for the Vitameatavegiman and glued it to a herbal supplement bottle.
The pearls came from my jewelry box at home and the hat was purchased at a craft store, painted with a sponge brush and we hot glue-gunned the black ribbon on. Lucy's red hair was a spray from a costume shop.
