Homemade Garden Gnome Boy Costume

I thought up and created my 20 month old son's Homemade Garden Gnome Boy Costume this year. I wanted to be creative, but keep it simple and didn't have money to be spending on an extravagant costume anyway. It is very basic, but with the help of my mom and a friend, we made this little gnome costume for under $10.

We either already had the materials (beard and brow fluffy fabric, felt fabric, pants and watering can), found them at a thrift store (black rubber garden boots) or bought them cheaply (red stretchy cone hat fabric, dollar store blue tunic top).

I also tried to keep in mind how to make a costume that a busy toddler would hopefully wear/keep on which meant making his hat and beard look cute, but stay off his face, to keep him from just pulling it off.

My twin boys are 25 months and I have been looking for a good way to do the beard and brows without them messing with them. I love this idea, so cute. THANKS!

Homemade Lawn Gnomes Costumes

For high school spirit week there was a theme every day. My friend Kara and I love spirit week. Monday was twin day. Usually people come in wearing matching socks or matching outfits. We didn't want to do the normal thing. I don't know how I got this idea for Homemade Lawn Gnomes Costumes, but for some reason, lawn gnomes came to mind!

It was a challenge and what started as a basic pointed hat and homemade green shirt and pointed shoes developed into something even more awesome with signs that together read "Welcome to our garden" and we topped it off with a beard and corn cob pipe! Of course we won first place and everyone in the school was talking about it. It was a lot of fun to make the homemade costumes.

This is my daughter dressed in a Homemade Garden Gnome Costume sitting on a mushroom. It was about $30 dollars to make. I started with a hula hoop as the base of the mushroom, then I pinned the fabric all around it, I cut a hole in the center just big enough for her to fit through and then I lined the inside with more fabric so I could stuff it with balloons. I used suspenders to hold up the mushroom. Then stuffed a pair of black pants and shoes and attached it to the mushroom.

I then put her inside the mushroom and put on her blue shirt and belt, hat and beard. She was able to walk around in this no problem and one 1st place at both contests that she entered.

About two weeks before Halloween, my friends and I were discussing our costumes. One friend suggested a gnome and everyone laughed out loud. You see, I'm terrified of gnomes specifically yards gnomes. I have no idea why, they are just creepy looking. So the Roaming Gnome began as a joke. All my friends knew of my fear and thought it very humorous and if you didn't know me, it still was a pretty neat costume.

I got all the clothes for the Garden Gnome Costume at thrift shops in town. The pretty authentic shoes were a find!! I stuffed myself with cotton pillow fluff from the fabric section of Wal-Mart.

Wanted to be a garden gnome but not a guy since I wanted to carry around my actual gnome with me. Could NOT find the right stuff and ended up making the whole Homemade Garden Gnomess Costume myself. Also works, kind of, as a princess costume.
