I made these paper mache Fraggle Rock characters for my friends and myself to wear out to a club for Halloween. It was a real treat trying to figure out how to make them wearable but with a little brain power I was able to do so successfully.
I used baseball caps sized to my friends heads to build from. I then stuffed a plastic bag with newspaper to get the shape of the beak, taped that onto the peak of the hat. I then attached 2 Styrofoam balls to the top for eyes. Then taped cardboard from a cereal box around the bottom of the hat along the back stopping at the edges of the peak of the hat.
Next I made a bottom jaw out of more cereal box cardboard but didn’t attach it. I then used the paper strips and paste to paper mache 4 layers. Next I painted it with acrylic paints, varnished it. Then attached the bottom jaw with fasteners so it can move. Finally I bought some feather Boas and hot glued them on for the hair.
The masks slip over the head like helmets and your face perks out of the open mouth of the Fraggle. I will post a couple of pics of us in full costume on a later date. For now here are a few pics of the process. I think they turned out great and my friends and i had a wonderful time decorating them together on the weekend!!!
For the bodies we went to the thrift store and bought clothing similar to the clothing the Fraggles wore on the show then painted on details and sewed on tails with tufts of feathers at the end to match the hair.
For last year's carnival we wanted costumes of two characters from children's television serials. Finally we decided to make Gobo and Red (here in Spain she was Rosi) from Fraggle Rock.
The upper part of the head is a cap covered with something similar to velvet. It's usually used for carnival and Halloween costumes because it's cheaper than velvet. We sewed a wire to the cap, to both sides of the cap and we used it like support of the lower part of the mouth. Then we used ping-pong balls with a black point that we painted for the eyes. And a feather boa for head's and tail's hair.
We made trousers in two parts. The upper one was made with long's hair's fabric, like shorts. And then we made legs with the same fabric that we used for our heads. After all we sewed to it a long tail with the feather boa on the end.
Gobo dressed a khaki fisherman's vest and a yellow jersey, and Red had a red jersey, but we found all at home. We were very proud of our Homemade Fraggle Rock Costumes.
This year for Halloween we all decided to dress up as Jim Henson characters. My two Sisters in law both love Fraggle Rock so I helped them come up with these Red and Moaky homemade Fraggle Rock couple costumes. My Mother in Law made the outfits out of fleece and they bought colored tights to wear underneath. The heads are made from baseball caps with felt glued on. We put stuffing inside the heads to get them to stand up a bit taller.
The eyes are Styrofoam balls with felt glued over them, and sewed onto the hats. For red's pigtails we cut a paper towel tube in half and hot glued feathers around it, and for Moakleys we just glued it on all around. The mouths are foam rings cut in half and covered with felt, and the tails are made from felt stuffed and have feathers glued at the ends.
The costumes turned out really great and everyone sang the Fraggle Rock song everytime we walked by. It was a really fun night!
