The idea for this homemade Lt. Dan and Forrest Gump costume came from the movie "Forrest Gump".
The hardest part was getting a wheelchair but I eventually found one on sale for $90 on Craigs list.
Other items bought for Lt. Dan's costume: - the wig was a hippy wig found on ebay called the tripping wig, which cost $30. - $5 dog tags bought on ebay with the name Lt. Dan Taylor written on them. - two Vietnam veteran bumper stickers found on ebay for $5. These I put on the chair. - facial hair and women's eye liner.
The shirt, pants and American flag bandana I had at home already.
Items bought for Forrest Gump's costume: - a $30 hat from the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co website. - a blue checkered shirt won on ebay for $10.
My friend already had the khaki-colored suit at home.
We partied in Atlantic City and the costume was a big hit with everybody. My knees hurt the next day, though, from sitting so awkwardly.

We came up with the idea to be the crew from the movie Forrest Gump. We started with finding a wheel chair at a local nursing home and fixing it to where the legs could not be very well seen. Many people actually thought he was an amputee.
We then had to decide which Forrest and which Jenny from the movie we would be. We thought the ping pong Forrest was the most creative. Jenny from the wedding scene was a difficult task. We were able to find an old wedding dress at a local Goodwill. Bubba had to use make up to color himself and found an army suit from a friend.
Finding a wig for momma Gump was also difficult but I think we found the perfect one and other pieces of her costume from local thrift stores.
Our Homemade Forrest Gump Crew Costume was a huge hit at all the costume contests we attended.
My sister and I have built a reputation for having awesome Halloween costumes and this one was a HUGE hit. We created our Forrest Gump and Lt. Dan Couple Costume using clothing from our own closets and a few pieces found at a thrift store. My sister played Lieutenant Dan and sat on her legs most of the night to create the illusion of being an amputee... and it worked, people were obviously concerned! She also 'nubbed' the legs of her pants with a rubberband to enhance the illusion. My sister drew the emblem for my 'Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.' hat and the cover of my Curious George book that I carried.
