Homemade Lily Pad Costume

Homemade Lily Pad Costume

I made these homemade Lily Pad costume and Lily Flower costume for my daughters when they were 3 and 6 years old. They wanted to be the same thing, but not “exactly” the same.

Pink and Purple: I started with a piece of foam, which I cut into a flower shape. I cut out the purple fabric to cover the foam and appliquéd a pink accent flower. I then sewed up the purple fabric to cover the foam. I had to add the green “Lily Pad” parts separately, stitching them on by hand. I added some elastic to fit around her arms so that she could wear it like wings.

White and Yellow: I cut a piece of foam in the shape of a lily pad. I then cut some green colored fabric to cover the foam. I appliquéd some white flower petals onto the green fabric before sewing it together. Again, I added elastic so she could wear it like wings. For the front flower I cut foam petals, covered them with white fabric and joined the pieces together. I added yellow furry yarn in the middle to cover the sewing spots. There is a white string around her neck, so she wore this like a necklace.

I made flower skirts and matching shirts, purple/pink and white/yellow, for both girls. I cut and sewed flower petals and strung them on elastic to make a necklace, arm bands and leg bands. For the headbands I covered a regular headband with a fabric tube. I then cut petal shapes out of foam and covered them with fabric. I hand stitched the petals onto the headband.

We were inspired by a cell phone commercial for this year's costumes. A guy takes his old cell phone into a pawn shop and asks the clerk what he can get for it... "I give you Dancing Flower". This was a toy that came out in the 80's and I actually owned one. As soon as we saw the commercial we got excited to create these flowers.

The fabric is actually bathing suit material that we sewed together to create the body and the petals and the face. We stuffed the petals, leaves and face to give it a rounder, cartoonish look. We used A LOT of coat hangers to form the petals and they eyes are made out of felt and then glued on. The eyelashes on mine are pipe-cleaners (as are the teeth on my husbands), I added blush, a beauty mark and a small bee on one of my petals. Both mouths are made out of mesh.

The pots are made out of brown felt and pool noodles. The helmets were the hardest part to do. We found two plastic helmets and attached a bar for the face to sit on.

We had such a great time in these costumes. We danced by swaying around in circles! We hope you enjoy seeing them as much as we LOVED making them and being DANCING FLOWERS!

Love it

Great job! I remember the real dancing flowers and this is a great representation of those. I can not believe you did not wing, guess you needed a wing man to tell everyone how you guys made them, I find it helps to have someone brag for you, lol! I just love them, what do you have planned for next year?

Awesome

Thanks so much for your comments!!
I'm really glad you both liked the costumes... we had such fun in them!

A wing man is a great idea, lol! We will absolutely have to do that from now on!
Oh well, we'll just take it as a compliment that the judges thought they weren't home made!!!

Coolest Homemade Flower Bud Costume 17

Homemade Flower Bud Costume

I made this homemade flower bud costume for my second daughter when she was 3 months old. It is an accompaniment to the hydrangea costume that I made for my other daughter.

It was pretty simple. I started with a crocheted green hat. I cut flower shapes out of felt and layered them for contrast. I sewed them onto the hat and then glued a circle in the middle to cover the sewing. For the mat I sewed up a simple leaf shape using green textured fabric and batting. After turning right side out I then sewed some “veins” on the leaf. I also added some of the flowers to the leaf mat.

I dressed her up in a simple pink onesie and wrapped her in a purple blanket. It was an easy costume and not too invasive for the baby. When we walked around I was able to hold her on the mat.

Coolest Pink Daisy Costume 9

Little Pink Daisy Costume

Little Pink Daisy Costume

I got this idea for a pink daisy costume from a Tom Arma costume, but didn't want to pay the price, so decided to make my own cuter version. I used felt, foam sheets, and hot glue to construct the flower head, and "necklace" to continue the petal circle.

I wanted her to have a flower pot, so I cut the bottom out of a light weight plastic pot, added a few holes to tie the ribbon through, and then she "wore it" almost like overalls.

I have never seen another costume like it, and she turned a lot of heads!
