I made this fairy costume for my husband to wear at our daughter's 1st birthday. Every year we have a theme and he begrudgingly dresses up to match that theme.( I think secretly he loves it)
This particular year we had a fairy party so I got to work creating him the perfect fairy outfit. The wig we brought from a store and them dressed it up with some pretty pink ribbon to match his skirt. The top we just bought, the skirt however I had to make as unfortunately they do not make fairy skirts to fit a 6 foot tall man. With this I brought the tuille, some elastic and some ribbon and sewed them all together to make this very pretty skirt for him to wear.
The tiara and the wand were again just store bought but the wings I had to modify to fit. I could not buy a pair of fairy wings to fit him so I came across this big butterfly that I then made into the wings. I added elastic to it to slip over his arms and keep it in place and made a few other minor changes to it to make them look more like wings.
All in all I think he looks very pretty and the kids just loved it. Some I must admit were a bit scared but all the parents got a good laugh out of it.
I was so tired of all the hoochie costumes that were out there for preteen and teen girls so I decided to try my hand at making my daughter's costume even though I know nothing about sewing.
My daughter wanted a fairy Halloween costume so I decided to buy a lot of fall stuff since it was already at 40% off in some stores and make her a beautiful tutu skirt and decorate and brown leotard that had fall colored halograms on it. I also made her the head piece that had streams down the back and could be tied to fit any size head.
The tutu skirt was made with about 200 yards tulle in yellow, gold, orange, brown and burgandy. I also added silk fall leaves around the waist of the tutu and feather butterflies on the tutu and on the headpiece. And though you can't see it in the picture the skirt had gold glitter sprayed on it thanks to spray fabric adhesive glitter.
When we went trick or treating she had her picture taken several times by moms who just loved her costume.
I made this Autumn Fairy costume for my daughter this year, at her request. I used the McCall's pattern # M4887, for the dress, vest, and skirt, and purchased the wings, as I thought they were gorgeous. The wings are called "Shimmering Dark Butterfly Wings", and are made by Fun World. They are adult sized, but fit her perfectly none-the-less, even though she is only ten year old, and petite for her age.
Most of the fabric I chose came from the home / upholstery section of my local fabric store; it was quite reasonably priced. In her hair she is wearing artificial leaves, attached with hair pins. It doesn't show in the picture, but she is wearing gold metallic nail polish on her nails, and Revlon "Make a Sheen lustrous shadow", in "olive it up", on her eyes. Her face is dusted with shimmery gold powder.
She definitely feels like the graceful fairy she wanted to be!
