I have always loved Day of the Dead art, so why not dress like it! I bought an old wedding dress from the thrift store and began cutting. First I cut of the sleeves and zipper since it was too small, then I added grommets and turned the back into a corset style dress. I put that aside and searched the internet on how to make fabric flowers. Once I figured it out, I sat in front of the TV making hand made flowers off and on for a few weeks. Once I thought I had enough flowers I began to sew them to the top of the dress that I previously cut until they looked a bouquet. These flowers are on the front, back and one shoulder to support the weight of the dress.

Once this was complete I searched for skeleton gloves, could not find any! So I painted 2 pair of cotton winter gloves for myself and my husband (this way they would look great all night). As for my husband's costume, his was relatively easy. I sewed ribbon onto a white shirt to make red ruffles and added some of my flowers to his hat. This all goes well with a simple tux, always handy to have! Now just wait for the big day, Halloween. It took me about an 40 min to paint my husband. My makeup took about 2 hrs since I had to paint my face, chest and arms. My wig and vail covered my back so I just painted it black.

This Dia de Los Muertos Adult Couple Costume was a blast. We had our picture taken every 5 seconds, that’s how I know it worked! Oh Yeah, daisy contacts made it a lil creepier!

I love having an excuse to be colorful and authentic, so for this Halloween I dressed as a Mexican Sugar Skull (Frida Kahlo inspired). This is a great inexpensive way of making yourself notice at a Halloween party and it's easy to do!

The best part of this DIY Mexican Sugar Skull Dia de los Muertos Inspired Group Halloween Costume is that a lot of the clothes pieces are things girls already have in their closet. The costume consist of a long black skirt, a colorful blouse(or even a corset), big jewelry (necklace, hand bangles and earrings)and finally a shawl. To add more drama you can add as many colorful flowers on your head as you like.

Lastly, I painted my face as a sugar skull. This is the part that will add the final touch to the whole look. There are great videos on how to do this make up in youtube. I was a little intimidated by the painting..but you can practice and create a basic outline on your face with a light color eye liner to create the basic shape and just go over it with face paint. You can add your own twist by making it your own (I painted hearts in mine). I added color shading, but black and white also works well. To make things even more fun, I got my friends to dress as one too! it was so much fun to see 4 sugar skulls together rather then one! and we got lots of compliments and pictures with everyone at the party.

This costume is all about being colorful and celebrating "dia de los muertos". I love the contrast of a skull (which is usually symbolized as dark) with the lively Mexican folklore!

This is a Homemade Dia De Los Muertos Couple Costume my wife and I wore to a Halloween party. The paint is water based and I used an airbrush to paint the black base and a hand brush to paint the bones. My wife made the colored paper flowers.

Also another costume that was pretty cheap too do. It's mostly about the make-up! My inspiration was the art of Sylvia Ji. http://www.sylviaji.com/

The dress is just an old wedding dress you can find at any thrift shop and the hair piece is wired flowers. :)
