Homemade Crayon Costume

This is one of the coolest costumes I've ever made!

First buy some cheap red material. Measure your child from underarms to knees in length, and around the waist. Add 2" to the length and 6" to the waist measurement. Cut out a rectangle of material of this size. Sew the two long sides together to form a tube. Sew shoulder straps from scraps, or use same colored wide ribbon. Sew the straps to the top of the tube to form shoulder straps.

Lay the tube down on hard surface. Outline a large oval in the front center. Use masking tape to write the word "crayon" in the center of the oval. Place some old newspaper under this area and use a black marker to fill in the whole oval, right over and around the tape. When you remove the tape the word crayon will appear. For the stripes at the ends, again mark the space with masking tape to ensure a straight line.

For the hat: cut out a circle from red paper. roll it into a cone shape and trim the edges. I used a piece of red foam around the edge of the hat, but a plain pointed hat would work just as well.

For this homemade crayon costume, wear over monochromatic pants and shirt and your good to go!

On the 19th of September 2008 a group of friends wore the homemade Crayola crayons costumes to a 21st fancy dress birthday party! Our crayons now have the number one group for 'Crayola Crayons costumes' on Facebook, with messages regularly asking 'how can we make one ourselves!'

The Crayons featured are: Orange - Robert Whyte. Blue - Robert Jackson. Pink - Laura Franklin. Gold - Rebecca Doyle. Silver - Jennifer Keates. Dark Green - Lee Randle. Light Green - Andy Long. Black - Dave Burt. Purple - Danielle Clayton. Red - Mike Burnett.

Step by step how to make!
• Buy a massive sheet of cardboard (available at the range)
• Cut out a stencil of the crayola logo and colour it in with marker pen on the front.
• Draw the squiggle lines along the top and bottom
• Buy some black elastic for shoulder straps (from a market, or cheap pound shop)
• The hat, draw and cut out a large circle, slice down the middle and fold the hat inwards, so it makes a cone shape, the elastic again to fasten.
• And of course the face-paints!
• A stapler is essential too!

We made the girls these homemade crayola crayons and their box costume with felt, black paint metal clothes hangers, and party hats. The box we painted and Velcroed in the back so they could come out of it. These costumes took us a few days to do, especially the paint part!!! We were very proud of the way it turned out.

Some people wanted us to try to submit it to crayola, but didn't know how, so I did the next best thing!!! I have thought seriously about putting them on eBay! The girls absolutely loved it, and so did everybody else, they won the costume contest in their grade. It takes a lot longer to do a homemade costume like this than to do store bought, but it turned out so good, and it was worth the time!!! It was fun to make and different!!!

Now we are on to this Halloween trying to figure out what to do for their costumes, and for two of their brothers who are in Kindergarten!!! GOOD LUCK to anybody who tries to make these, it's really not hard!!!

We actually got this idea from this site but it's always helpful to have more pictures to guide you in the costume making process.

We basically bought some fabric and (since none of us can sew) super-glued Velcro on to the back to make tube top dresses and then cut out the logo and the squiggles at the top from black felt.

Overall, it was a really fun experience making these homemade crayon costumes and we were really proud of the final product.
