Coolest Munchkin Couple Halloween Costume

My 9 year old son and his best friend wanted to be something original for this year’s costume parade at school. They were throwing out inappropriate and outrageous ideas (mostly potty humor, again they are 9 year old boys) when my son’s friend yelled “How about a midget?” I said “I can do that, but let’s call them munchkins!”

When my aunt was in high school in the early 70’s, the cheer leading squad created something like this with pillowcases and their arms over their heads. They came running out in them for about 5 minutes. I’m sure their arms hurt. I remembered this idea in the early 90’s and a friend of mine helped me draw these characters on “pillowcases” that I made out of twin bed sheets.

My husband and I wore them one Halloween and the cases have been in a box in the garage since that time. We held wooden dowels in our hands to keep the heads up.

I resurrected the pillowcase faces and re-colored them with new fabric markers. We fitted the boys with button down shirts around their waists (so the collar of the shirt is right above their butts, which is why it stays on so well). We stuffed some old white gloves with polyester fill and attached them to the shirt with safety pins. We stuffed the shirts with polyester fill (adding extra when we put them on the kids so that the arms stayed up) and tucked them into elastic waist shorts. My husband took a couple of old backpacks and creatively used duck tape and coat hangers to secure dowels from the back packs into a V holding the “pillowcase” in place. We added a couple of things to dress it up, like an old clip-on on boy’s tie on the man and a tinfoil necklace on the woman. She also has a spider ring on her hand.

I think it cost about $20 to make this Munchkin Couple Halloween costume (I had some polyfill on hand but had to buy more and the fabric markers were about $10).
