Coolest Mary Poppins And Bert Costume

My family loves Mary Poppins and the kids’ grandmother and me put this Mary Poppins and Bert costume together. My mom made the coat as well as the little pleated collar with the bow at the neck.

I found a cheap straw hat and died it black. When I died it the hat kind of shrunk and the brim sort of ruffled and it looked perfect! Then I attached plastic daisies and cherries I found at a fabric store.

For the umbrella I took green felt, folded in half so it would cover the umbrella handle, and then I drew a parrot’s head on both sides and then glued it on with hot glue. We finished Mary off with the white gloves we had in her dress-up box and applied the rosy cheeks.

I bought Bert the chimney sweep’s black sweats at Walmart and I found the hat at Goodwill and dyed it black. I then spray-painted a bottle brush for his chimney sweep and ashed up his cheeks.

These costumes were great because everyone, young and old, identified them because the movie is such a classic.

  1. Both costumes are really good!

However, I was looking for ideas regarding a chimney brush for my little boy Jamie who’s dressing up as Bert – will definitely try you idea of dying the brush.

    Many thanks!

  2. You don’t have any idea what pattern your Mom used for the coat and pleated collar? It is beautiful and my 3 year old would live to be Mary for Halloween this year.

  3. My 4 1/2 year old wants to be Mary Poppins for Halloween this year very badly!! We bought the authentic umbrella and handbag at the production gift shop of the Broadway performance we attended in Cleveland. But, I’m not finding the coat anywhere…that I like, that is, until I saw yours!! Just curious how old your daughter was when she wore this, for size purposes? and, of course, if you’d be interested in selling it to me? Looking forward to hearing back from you!! love, love them both! but all I really would need would be that adorable blue jacket!(my almost 2 yr. old son will be Bert, as well, which should be easy to do)

  4. I am making a similar costume for my 3 1/2 year old. I’ve got almost anything but can’t find a hat (black or otherwise) anywhere! Where did you find yours? Thanks.

  5. I, myself am planning on dressing up as Mary Poppins for a fall festival and couldn’t come up with how to make her umbrella. Thank you so much for the idea of the felt, I think I will try that. I found a felt hat, but it doesn’t quite have the same look as the straw, so I think I will keep looking for a straw one. The costumes are absolutely adorable!

  8. I’m seeing this was originally posted 5 years ago, but wondering if you ever sold the coat / costume? If not, would you be willing to sell it now? And if not, do you know what pattern your mom used for the coat? Thanks!
