Original Version of a Mad Hatter Costume

This entire Mad Hatter costume was hand made, except for the teapot purse which was found on ebay.

The vest was made from a pirate costume pattern, the jacket from a lion trainer costume and just a normal shorts pattern for the pants. The hat was made out of 2mm foam and covered with the same fabric from the jacket. I got all my fabric in the alley downtown, so it was a super bargain. The collar was also fabric covered foam. I just used remnants and really, that’s about it.

It was the first costume I ever made, took maybe a week and cost under $25 if you don’t count the purse.

  1. The alley is a general term for the fashion district in Los Angeles, specifically I believe I bought these fabrics from a dude named Shawn at 9th/San Pedro..

The hat is simplicity pattern 4015. beware though, the pattern hat is HUGE. Mine is 1/2 the size of it, but I still used the general template. If you want to save yourself the $$ just cut out a circle with the center cut out for the hat brim, a small circle for the top and 5 rectangles (that are larger on top and get smaller) for the sides essentially that’s all it was.. Have fun!
