Homemade Willy Wonka, Ooompa Loompa and Violet Beauregarde Family Costume

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) is one of my all time favorite movies. I told my 4 year old if he would be an Oompa Loompa, I’d get him a huge lollipop.

After purchasing the lollipop, I got a few yards of white felt, a few yards of a purple paisley pattern, sage green ribbon and thick red craft ribbon and a hoola hoop (for my Violet Beauregard costume). I also searched on ebay for an XL pair of blue scrubs (with drawstring) and a 3XL woman's dress shirt to sew the hoola hoop into and stuff with pillows when necessary to fill it out.

I found Willy Wonka’s jacket at Goodwill in the woman’s section. We’ve got our moneys worth from it (he was the Joker the year before!). Ordered the top hat online for relatively cheap. Sewed the paisley fabric onto an existing vest he wore as the Joker and we’re practically done with Willy.

As for my Oompa Loompa, I purchased a white turtleneck and white sports wristbands from Walmart along with a box of brown dye. Also 4 wooden buttons I painted dark brown, white gloves and brown dress socks and some white craft paint. I dyed the turtleneck and wristbands together (though they could have used at least one more dye bath), then drew the stripes on with the white paint. The socks I put on a card board sleeve to stretch out when I painted the white stripes.

The Oompa Loompa costume pants were made by grabbing a pair of his bigger sweat pants, tracing them then adding the poof to the lateral aspect of the knee. I ended up sewing the buttons to the pants and using Velcro to attach the suspenders in the front (in case we had to make a quick trip to the bathroom). The wig was recycled from the Joker costume, but originally it was a blond curly wig I trimmed and sprayed.

Overall, the Oompa Loompa costume was the easiest with the most impact. So many people didn’t understand what I was, but those that did just gawked over it. We posed for so many pictures that night and by Monday, my boss had already seen pictures of us.
