Homemade Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett Costumes
Last year my husband and I were inspired by Tim Burton's version of the musical Sweeney Todd Demon Barber, but the ready-to-wear costumes for Sweeney were very expensive and the costumes for Mrs. Lovett were nonexistent. So we made our own
Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett Costumes.
Mrs. Lovett: I sewed the skirt using a pattern. The corset is ribbed, stretchy fabric that I just sewed into a tube, leaving the edges raw. The top was a shell I had worn in a wedding as a bridesmaid. I took a small feather boa and sewed it around the neck and sleeves. I sewed the black lace on the shoulders as well. I made the gloves by tracing my hand on lace, cutting it out and sewing the sides. I just did a single hand stitch between each finger. The hat I bought at a costume shot but it was too tall, so i cut off the top, shortened it and hot glued it back on.
Sweeney: Gray pants and shoes he already had, paired with a white button down we got at Good Will. The scarf is one I had and used to wear. I made the vest with a sewing pattern. The jacket we found at the Salvation Army for a couple bucks! I bought a white hair streak at a beauty supply store and clipped it in. I also bought a straight razor at the beauty supply store.
The makeup for both was super easy. White baby powder on the whole face and lots of black eye shadow around the eyes.
