Coolest Homemade Rapunzel in Her Tower Wheelchair Costume

What’s Rapunzel without her tower?

Years ago we read a suggestion in Exceptional Parent magazine to incorporate the wheelchair into the Halloween costume. So we made a three-sided “tower” out of a large cardboard box to fit around the wheelchair. The box easily folded flat for transporting when not around the wheelchair. We attached string loops to the inside of the box for hanging the box from the wheelchair. The loops in the back were adjustable to be able to adjust the height/level of the box. A small piece of 1×1 can be used the inside edge of the box to add stability if the long side is bowing too much.

We covered the cardboard with gray/silver paper tablecloths and then used black markers to draw the stones and shade them. We got Sarah a long blond wig and braided it, making sure the braid hung visibly over the tower wall. The dress was (gasp!) store-bought for a change – a princess-type gown of some sort that matched the coloring of the wheelchair.

We thought the Rapunzel in Her Tower Wheelchair Costume came out very well – but apparently people aren’t as familiar with their fairy tales as they once were because most people didn’t seem to know who Rapunzel was even once we told them Sarah was Rapunzel!
