Coolest Homemade Princess Tiana Costume

I made this Homemade Princess Tiana Costume for my daughter in September 2009 for her to wear for Halloween. I didn’t have a pattern for this dress and made the whole thing from scratch (my mother helped with the painstaking flower and headpiece).

Bodice: The bodice front was made using four petal patterns cut from ivory and green satin. Each piece was double lined with fusible interfacing and fabric and turned inside out. I used clear bra straps to support the back was essentially two rectangles lined in the same fashion. It only took a yard of each fabric for the bodice.

Skirt: The underskirt was made using 6 yards of gathered tulle. The petal part was made using 2 yards of ivory satin with petals that were hand drawn out and (like the bodice) lined with interfacing and fabric. I sewed up the center of each “petal” to add detail. The over skirt of green was essentially five large petals free cut from green satin and gathered at the top. This was A LOT of layers to sew through but ye old reliable managed the job using heavy weight thread.

Flower: The flower was made using scraps of ivory satin, cut into petals, sewn and turned inside out. Pipe cleaners were inserted and stitched to the middle to allow the petals to bend. The dark green leaves were sewn the same way. The long trailing pieces were formed using a piece of old wire hanger.

Headband: The headband was a basic fabric covered headband that we covered again in matching fabric using a hot glue gun. Extra petals were made using the technique above and wired beads were threaded through the center point of each before the petals were hot glued to the band.

  1. OMG! I want this dress for my girl.

I guess your girl is big now so it doesn’t fit her anymore. So, is the dress on sale? If so, contact me at k.muuse[at]hotmail[dot]com

  2. The dress was lost when my DH, who saw the black bag it was in and decided to be helpful, left it curbside! It still hurts my heart because it was so beautiful!
