Homemade Peacock Costume
I made this Homemade Peacock Costume for an upscale Halloween party I was invited to in Houston. I knew I wanted to stay away from the stereotypical "Sexy Nurse", "Sexy Girl Scout", and "Sexy Dead Nurse Vampire Girl Scout" costumes, but I still wanted a costume that would grab attention. And, the peacock idea was born.
After some research I discovered the colorful peacocks were actually male. The females are more of a brownish/gray color. But if you want to be a progressive peacock and go against the norm this Halloween, I have the instructions for making a memorable peacock costume.
I bought a royal blue leotard online through Danskin. But, I'm sure you can find a leotard at any dance store. I decided "Sexy Peacock" would be out of the question, so I ran to Wal-Mart and bought black tights and an XL black dance skirt from the little girl's section.
For the feathers, I wanted an authentic look. So, I got on eBay and bid on 100 50-inch feathers. I ended up using about 50 feathers for the fan, and cut them to size.
I attached the feathers to a small piece of cardboard that I trimmed down to fit to the small of my back. Using a heavy duty stapler, I arranged the feathers and stapled them to the cardboard starting with the tallest feathers first and layering as I went.
Once I finished with the fan, I wrapped the cardboard in a long piece of black cloth leaving the ends of the cloth free to tie around my waist as a belt.
I topped the costume off with feathered eyelashes I bought at Wal-Mart and black heels to blend with the tights. And voila! A very pretty, male peacock costume.
