This is a Homemade Kanye West and Taylor Swift at Video Music Awards Costume.
When I saw this event unfold, I knew right away that people would be talking about this and remembering it for a long time.
Since the ‘characters’ were so distinctly dressed, and it would be a lot of fun to recreate, I decided to do this costume with my friend Billy playing Taylor.
I made everything for both costumes. Taylor’s dress is made out of a single piece of fabric, and is safety-pinned together. The moon man is made from a G.I. Joe figure, wrapped in Mylar tape and or painted ‘chrome’. The moon man helmet is made from a plastic Christmas ornament and a gumball machine ‘charm’ bubble. The rest of the moon man was made from a remote control antenna, foam insulation, foam core(logo), and the base is made from a whip cream container with party beads.
Kanye’s shirt is made from a woman’s top. The pants are made from 2 different pairs of woman’s jeans. I used party store cream makeup with black lipstick to darken my goatee, eyebrows, and create the ‘maze’ pattern hair. To avoid carrying heavy/dangerous glass, and avoid open container hassles, I made the Cognac bottle out of 4 different bottles- 2 travel bottles, and 2 plastic, rootbeer bottles, plus some sheet plastic.
This costume was created strictly for fun, it was not meant to offend anybody, and it was universally loved by everyone who saw us on Halloween weekend. Recreating an iconic moment in music history was a blast!
