Coolest Homemade Flower and Bee Costumes

When my daughter was 3, she wanted to be a flower for Halloween. I tried to come up with something my then 6 month old son could be which would coordinate with her costume. Hence, the bumblebee costume. These Flower and Bee Costumes were pretty easy.

They were basically made with felt and sweatsuits. I hand stitched all of the felt, but you could easily use heavy double-sided tape, Velcro, staples, etc. if you’re not into sewing. Stitching for me made sense, so that I could easily re-use the sweatsuits.

For the flower: I used a pair of hot-pink felt “petals” with a pipe cleaner glued in between so the petals were pliable, and hand stitched them together. I also left a tail, so to speak, of pipe cleaner hanging at the bottom of the petals. I then wrapped this pipe cleaner around a headband. I may have used too many petals, making the headband a bit top heavy. To solve this, I attached the headband to a knit hat, using more pipe cleaners. My advice would be to make fewer petals, but it all worked out. Finally I cut out enough leaf shapes from green felt to stitch around the collar of her collar. Voila! A pretty pink flower.

For the bee: Using a black, hooded sweatsuit, I hand stitched yellow strips of felt across the front and back of the sweatsuit, as well as on both sides of the pant legs. I attached two large black buttons to the top of the hood to attach black pipe cleaners to, for the antennae.

Lastly, I cut out a pair of wings from a piece of cardboard and then covered it with aluminum foil and attached it with Velcro. They were adorable together and everyone loved them!
