This Homemade Censored Costume idea came to me late one night when I couldn't sleep. I was up watching some ridiculous infomercial when a Girls Gone Wild commercial came on.
Just as I was about to change the channel, I giggled at the thought of a girl ACTUALLY having a censored bar across her chest when she lifted her shirt. Ding ding ding. I was going to be a walking censored girl gone wild. When I told my best friend about the idea, she obviously wanted in.
I looked online to find exactly what I was looking for only to find NOTHING even close. Upon further research, I found a few homemade things that were similar to what I was envisioning but nothing near as awesome. Mostly oversized cardboard with a sharpie scribbed on it glue over a shirt. If I was going to do this, I wanted to go all out! I've always been a creative person, so to the drawing board I went!
My list of necessary materials: Black fabric, white felt, scissors, needle, thread, stencils, ribbon, hot glue. Total cost about $25. Now I may be creative, but I've never sewn anything in my whole life so this was going to be a learning experience for me. I measured both myself and my friends chests (from armpit to armpit in the front) and hips. I took the length of each measurement and cut it into the black fabric with a height of about 4-5 inches for the top and about 7-8 inches for the bottoms (just enough to cover the goods.) Then I cut each bottom piece in half. Then I cut about a half inch to 3/4 of an inch off the length of each piece. I wanted there to be a gap on the sides that would give it more of a front and back bar look as opposed to a solid black skirt life piece. To give the "bars" clean edges, I folded over about a 1/4 of an inch on all the sides and ran the needle and thread along it to create a folded edge. Then I cut 12 pieces of ribbon into about 7in pieces and hot glued three per side on the bottoms evenly so I could tie them across my body to close the skirt.
I did the same with the top but with a longer ribbon and only 2 pieces per side. While this was going on, I had my friend tracing the letters onto the white felt with the stencils. I just happened to find the perfect lettering. We needed 6 "censored" words total. I gave her the job of cutting them out as well. (It took forever). Once she was all done, I hot glued the letters to each piece and TA-DA! There you have it! Two handmade girls gone wild! We were SUCH a hit! I've never taken so many pictures in my life.
We entered a contest but the winner was a store-bought Oompa Lumpa costume because of the massive cheering section and the runner up was a girl in a Tim Tebow jersey (This IS Gatornation and Florida Gators DO love Tim Tebow) but I'm not bitter! We had fun making them and I loved to see it come to life! Now the hard part is figuring out how to top it next year.
