Coolest Bug Costume

Our family went as bugs. Praying Mantis, Ladybug, Butterfly, Bumble Bee & Firefly. All of the bug costumes ( except for the wings) were homemade.

I was the firefly. You can’t see the back of the costume but I used a white balloon with glow sticks inside for my bum light. Then just used sticky Velcro to attach it. It looked great at night.

My daughter is the one in the wheelchair. Her nickname is Doodlebug so of course she had to be the ladybug. I just made a balloon style dress with elastic in the hem and added felt dots. We stuffed our costumes with grocery bags so it was light weight.

My nephew is the praying mantis. The head was constructed out of foam and polar fleece. The eyes are Styrofoam balls covered with fleece and painted black dots.

We added the large sun glasses (partycity) because we thought that gave just the added touch. My niece is the beautiful butterfly. She made a gorgeous black dress that could be worn other times (thinking ahead) and made her antennas out of Styrofoam balls with spray glue and glitter.

We hope you enjoy our creations . We sure did!
Happy Halloween!

  1. these costumes are awesome. I needed some ideas for a dance and this helped me so much. I’m just buzzing with excitement over that balloon and glow stick creation, it’s amazing, I would have never thought of it. Thanks again, so much I appreciate it!

  2. I had to create a firefly costume for my 6 year old and I took a black balaclava and wrapped white Styrofoam balls in black netting secured with black pipe cleaners. I fed the pipe cleaners in through the balaclava and pulled the ends through to the center. I had a black hairband that I attached black pipe cleaners to and made to look like antennae and with the ends of the pipe cleaners from the eyeballs I secured the hairband to the balaclava so that it became on complete “mask” is you will. To make the firefly’s behind light up I took a yellow plastic salad bowl from the dollar store and secured a LED push light inside. I made a lid out of black foam board I had and cut it to fit. This reflected more light on the bowl giving it a brighter “glow”. I secured a second LED light to that part and drilled holes in both the foamboard and the salad bowl. I attached the two together with zipties and then left a loop to feed a belt through, which is how I secured it to my son. My hand easily slipped inside to turn the light on or off. I made wings out of black bristol board and drew with white pencil crayon the details for the wings. My son dressed head to toe in black and the costume looked amazing- especially with all the lights turned low.
