Coolest Homemade Cookie Monster Costume for Halloween

Here’s the story behind our Cookie Monster costume. My daughter really loves Cookie Monster, so she inspired me to come up with an original costume for her.

I went to Jo-Ann Fabrics to look for a pattern, but they don’t sell any Cookie Monster costume patterns, let alone any Sesame Street costume patterns. I picked the costume that I thought I could modify to look like Cookie Monster. I picked pattern 4440 by simplicity (look at the attached picture) and went by the bear template minus the ears and belly contrast.

I left the bottom of the booties off so my daughter wouldn’t be messing up the bottoms but I still wanted to cover her shoes. I stuffed with a small amount of craft filling to add to the Cookie Monster costume big head.

(Note: I waited till the simplicity patterns went on sale, and paid .99 for it).

Cookie Monster Costume

I bought 2 yards of the new curly fleece in a periwinkle blue color. I waited for the material to go on sale (reg. price 12.99/ yard got 40% off). I warn you when working with this material you will have blue fuzz everywhere when you cut it out. I bought 1/2 yard of periwinkle blue cotton for the lining in the Cookie Monster costume hood.

I also bought 1/4 yard of white spandex material for the eyes. I cut 2 circles and used a gathering stitch to help create the eyes. I stuffed with craft filling and then hand-stitched close with a clear thread. I placed the eyes on the hood of the costume and stitched with clear thread to the hood as well as stitched the eyes of the Cookie Monster costume together. I then bought extra large googly eyes from the craft store and hot-glued them in place.

This costume took me a week to make. I have 2 kids under 2 so I was only able to work on it for a couple of hours at a time. I would say you could do this in 1-2 days if you had the time to do it.

I think that anyone with some sewing experience could make this costume with no problem. I am not an expert sewer and the pattern suited me very well (sewing patterns for dummies), it explains everything in it. It only cost me around $20-$25, however I do have some basic supplies (needles, threads, paper etc.).

One of the great things about this costume is that if you live somewhere cold around Halloween this is worn over clothes and acts like its own coat. Good luck and have fun!

Total Spent: $20
