Coolest Homemade Kraken Costume

Climbing up stairs

A few years ago I wanted to be Davy Jones from "The Pirates of the Caribbean" movies. However, my mom forbid me from making it, as his beard reminds her of snakes, so I had to think of something just as awesome to make from the movies. One day it came to me: I would make a Kraken costume.

Last year, I had made a last minute Squid costume but, on looking it over, I noticed many flaws. So I started again this year from scratch. This time I used foam, as it is flexible but keeps enough shape. I painted over this with rubber paint to give it that realistic squid-skin feel, and sprayed it with paint for that nice aged look.

The teeth were taken from my old version and were made from clay. Modelled water was added to the mouth to give the effect of an ever present drool. A pouch was attached to the hole in the center of the mouth so, were you to feed me, I would keep it in. The mouth also had an opening from the inside so I could take whatever was in the pouch or stick out my hand.

Wires ran along each tentacle so that I could lift them up and move them about.

Awesome Costume! Am wondering if you know of anyone who makes the Kraken costume? My four year old is obsessed with getting this costume and I can't find it anywhere!

Coolest Treebeard The Ent from Lord of the Rings Costume 4

Homemade Treebeard The Ent from Lord of the Rings Costume

Homemade Treebeard The Ent from Lord of the Rings Costume

Each year at University there is a huge medics social event where older years can dress up fancy dress, the more creative the better.

Last year our theme was movie characters and I chose a Treebeard The Ent from Lord of the Rings Costume

I sewed a smock shaped top from two sheets of brown material then added strips of brown and green material, and some leaves and branches from the bushes at the back of our house to the costume. I wore brown tights underneath. To make myself taller I added a washbasket on top of my head which was strapped on and covered in brown material and decorated as with the top. It had a small hole cut out of the front so i could see out and I painted my face brown/green so I was camouflaged.

I had to get a taxi to the venue as it was difficult to walk in, but this added to the "Ent" appearance.

I thought you where trying to make an "Ent" costume not "Return of the Swamp Thing" Treebeard had shape and a face. Think you need to watch Lord of the Rings again.

This homemade Neverending Story Halloween cosutme idea actually came from a friend of mine who thought I looked like the child-like empress. We used beads and wire from craft store to make the head piece and used hair pins to keep it in place. I went with a white dress from an old angel costume because it had that sheer sleeves like the empress.

For Atreyu we found the necklace online... the dark brown pants, suede jacket, and belt at a thrift store. We used suede pieces from the craft store to make the belt pouch. The jacket was cut up to look like an open shirt... and leather string was woven on the trim of the jacket. The shoes were actually slippers found in a 99cent store.

This was a time consuming project... but overall we're really happy with the results. It was nice to see how happy and nostalgic it made other people feel too =)
