My 8 year old has a history of creative costumes, thanks to the sewing skills of his grandmother. In the past he has been Max from Where the Wild Things Are, a British redcoat, and Napoleon, to name a few. This year, we decided to explore his interest in the presidents - especially T.R. - since we had the chance to visit his Long Island home recently. So we made him a Homemade Teddy Roosevelt Costume.
We ordered an out of print soldier costume pattern, and adapted it to our purposes. The trickiest bit was tracking down the appropriate insignia, and cheap round glasses sized to fit a kid (thanks Build a Bear!). But success has been achieved, and he is ready to storm San Juan Hill! You can't see it in the pictures, but if he takes off the jacket he is wearing the appropriate blue flannel shirt and suspenders for those informal moments between battles!
The gaiters were created using the boot part of the pattern from a previous costume - Napoleon - which came with attached boots. I could only find white suspenders, but dunking them in a pot of tea for a few hours created the appropriate shade of khaki.
I could not find gauntlet style gloves for a his size that were under $60 at motorcycle stores, so I covered poster board with fabric, made a cone, and hot glued that to an old pair of leather gloves.
I suppose when he wears it to school, he will have to leave the gun at home! Now, if I can just figure out a saddle for our greyhound.

Homemade "I'm on a Boat" by T-Pain Costume
So as Halloween approached I decided I wanted to do something everyone would recognize and yet would still be original and funny. After dressing up as Will Ferrel from the Cowbell Sketch from SNL I decided I loved to be costumes that had a song to go along with it. So, this year I decided to dress up similar to the famous Lonely Island ft. T-Paine song: "I'm on a Boat". Now originally I was going to dress up like they were in the music video, but that wouldn't have been that recognizable.
As a result, I decided to have a sailor hat, some short funny shorts, a white T-shirt (which on the back says: "I'm on a Boat", and an actual boat. I would literally be on a BOAT. So I went and got a toy boat, cut out the back and tied it around my shoe. Then I decided to add the flippy floppies which were just some sandals tied around my neck with a shoe lace.
Needless to say the Homemade "I'm on a Boat" by T-Pain Costume was a hit and I got lots of attention, especially when they played the song at a part I was at!
This Halloween I decided to be adventurous and dress up like sexy Shakira from her video She Wolf. I got a black unitard and cut out the right shoulder, a hole in the right side of stomach, and cut out the left leg. I made the necklace with gold leafs and brown feathers. I used a blond wig with very dark roots. Finally I had a nude open toed boot on my left foot and a matching black open toed boot on my right foot.
I painted my nails bright red with glitter. I wore natural make up with a lot of mascara (you could also wear false lashes). Don't forget to work out a bunch a couple weeks before Halloween to get nice toned abs and arms. You can always use a little bronzer to accentuate your toned stomach muscles.
Last but not least, don't forget to smile, dance, and be confident in your Homemade Shakira She Wolf Costume.
