Thing 1 and Thing 2 Halloween Costume

Thing 1 and Thing 2 Halloween Costume

My two boys are 17 months apart, with the youngest being nearly 11 months. I looked for an idea that would incorporate a theme and came up with Thing 1 and Thing 2 Halloween Costume out of Cat in the Hat. I, of course, was Cat in the Hat.

The costumes were relative easy. For the boys, two red sweat suits we purchased, white felt and iron on fusible webbing, three bottles of fabric paint, and two blue fuzzy hats (the boys wouldn’t wear wigs). Cut the felt into a circle about the size of a dinner plate, iron on the fusible web according to directions, transfer the felt onto the front of the red shirts and outline with black paint. Write Thing 1 on one shirt and Thing 2 on the other. Easy

For Cat in the Hat, purchase a black sweatsuit. Use more white felt for the cat’s stomach, cut into an oval shape. Attach with fusible web as described above, and outline in black paint. Paint triangles along the edges. Purchase hat at party store (or make out of red and white felt). White gloves, a red scarf, and a triangle nose with whiskers drawn on your face with a makeup pencil, make the outfit complete.

The wagon was just a transportation vehicle for pulling the kids through the mall.

Random passers-by stopped us and asked for photos. We were impressed.

For school we get prizes for having a great creative costume, also we get bigger prizes and acknowledgment when you are in groups so I thought of Thing One and Thing Two from Cat in the Hat. At first my friend thought it would be hard but it actually is not once you find the wigs and everything starts falling in to place. I had a really fun time with this and I hope these tips help.

I started off with buying the wigs which had to be blue and short I bought at Wall-Mart,
Total 5$. Then we went to the mall and bought red sweat pants which were a bit pricey but I’m sue you could get cheaper. Total: 30$. Then a shirt as well that was a solid red, Total: 18$.

Then we got regular printer paper and cut it in a circle and wrote thing 1 or thing 2.

Thing 1 and Thing 2 Costume

For this Thing 1 and Thing 2 costume I bought a sleeper pattern that had a back opening for the main piece and used red fleece material.

For lettering: cut a circle (trace a small plate)of white felt and I used 1 1/2 inch iron-on letters to spell out Thing 1 and Thing 2. I found it easiest to just sew the circle onto the front; it would have been easier if done before I sewed the front/back together but it worked fine to sew it on after costume was complete.

I made little red spats to cover the kids shoes and used a strip of Velcro to close the back of the costume. (It called for a zipper but I thought that was unnecessary for a costume.) Blue "punk" wigs were of course found on eBay for about $10 each. Surprisingly easy and the result was awesome!

Total Spent: $50

Thing 1 and Thing 2 Costume

How cute is this?? My sons, which I lovingly call Thing 1 and Thing 2 are too adorable. This Thing 1 and Thing 2 costume was a very simple costume.

Red turtle neck, red sweat pants, red gloves, red socks, shoes painted red, if you want to, blue fun fur and swimmers caps (cause the fun fur is scratchy). I bought thick white fabric that I could use a Sharpee marker on. Found the decals on-line, imported them into Word and enlarged them. Printed and used it as a template.

Then, just quick stitch the decal you created to the front of the shirt. For the hair, I ordered blue swimmers caps online then hot glued the fun fur around the cap and ending with a point at the top.
