Original Homemade Captain America Costume Ideas

This is me in my Mrs Captain America. I was inspired by the Avengers this year and liked the possibility of growing this into a group costume at some point. I did start with a pre-made dress, mask and shield for Mrs Captain America but it definitely needed more pizazz!

I’ve recently fell in love with EL wire (electroluminescent wire), also known as glow wire. I ordered some red, white and blue strands and battery packs and went to work. I outlined the dress by gluing the wire around the edges and details. I sewed the wire down at corners and bends. Next I outlined the mask and taped up the extra so that light wouldn’t shine through. Finally I glued wire detail lights onto the shield and then had a brilliant idea! I decided to turn the shield into a purse. I glued fabric inside, added a zipper and stored all of the battery packs in the bag. I routed all the wires to the underarm of the costume, taping up any exposed glow wire that I didn’t want to show. Finally I added a strap to my shield/purse and was ready to go.

I already tried this out at a local night club and it was a huge hit! Everyone loved the lights, the detail shows up great in the dark club, people loved the purse/shield and the fact that it held all the battery packs and cabling, and it made it easy for all my friends to find me throughout the night. They had a mini costume contest at the end of the night and I made it to the finalists stage, but unfortunately they turned the lights on for the contest. Had the lights been lower I think I would have had a good chance at the top prize!

I would definitely combine EL wire and Halloween again in the future. I think it would be a great kids costume too because it has built in lights to keep the young trick-or-treaters safe and easily tracked by their parents!

We had Captain Morgan/Crunch/Lela/Kirk with me as Captain America. Since there were so many store bought versions of Captain I decided to make a cheap one out of cardboard and colored Duct Tape. I chose my design off of the brilliant work of the box hero corps. If you have not heard of them check them out!

So basically I found a dumpster full of cardboard and went to town cutting the arms/head/legs/hands/feet into wearable segments. I then bought several rolls of red, blue, and white Duct tape and put them over the cardboard body to make the Captain America costume design. For the belt I used black craft foam. The face was drawn on first, and then I got an exacto knife to cut out any sort of black line detail to use as eye holes. I then used a peach paint to color in the face, and then I redrew the face details in with a sharpie.

All of the detail on the Captain America costume body (Scales/Muscles/Outline) was done with a sharpie as well. While it was hot and difficult to walk in, I got countless compliments and everyone loved it!

Cool Miss Captain America Costume

I was inspired by a friend who makes things like backpacks and teddy bears out of duct tape. I wanted to make my own costume out of the same material and I couldn’t imagine dressing up as anyone other than my favorite super hero, Captain America.

I made this Captain America costume out of duct tape and my prop was made using duct tape and cardboard. I made a unique dress pattern that suited a person of my size and build then cut out the individual pieces of the pattern from sheets of duct tape then put them all together. I added some final touches and attached some velcro where the dress met in the back, and it was ready to go.

It wasn't the most comfortable costume to wear all night but I sure am proud of it. I got very positive reactions when wearing my costume. There were many individuals who were quite shocked to see that I had made my entire costume with just a few rolls of duct tape. My costume is an original duct tape dress that I designed myself. I have experience with making things like dresses and duct tape wallets, and I thought it would be a great idea to combine both and follow in my friends foot steps.

Making my Captain America costume was a great experience and it was great to finish a project that would leave a very big smile on so many peoples faces. It has always been my dream to become a super hero and this costume made my dream into a wonderful reality. I got a lot of support from friends and family and that really motivated me to make this costume. I decided to wear my costume to a school event where we were allowed to dress up as characters and I won a school contest for best costume.

Thank you for taking the time to read my entry. :)
