My friend Ashley and I are OBSESSED with cupcakes! It all started back in the summer with her candy land themed birthday. Her birthday being in June she had a candy adventure with a cupcake cake! My birthday followed close behind in July with another cupcake cake. It became quite apparent after purchasing matching juicy cupcake charm bracelets, and what we called our “friendship” cupcake key chains that cupcakes had quickly became a huge part of our personalities!
With Halloween approaching fast we hadn’t decided what we were going to be, but it seemed only fitting to make a Homemade Cupcake Couple Costume. 10 poster boards, 2 wreath rings, 4 yards of fabric(2 light pink, 2 bubblegum pink), 1 bag of poms, 1 box of nuddles, 2 hot pink wigs, tons of glitter, and 20 yards of ruffles later we were two brightly decorated cupcakes!
This costume took about 9 hours to make from start to finish beginning with folding the poster boards into accordions, and inserting the ring around the base to bring it in. We then attached the ruffles 2 yards each strap onto the top of the cup to hold it up, and pinned the bottom of the fabric to the base. When it came time to put the costumes on we tucked the remaining fabric into the tops of our shirts to hold it up, glued the poms and nuddles onto the fabric and put on our wigs, in total we wrapped about 8yards of ruffle around our arms as icing and we have to give credit to Sphere for doing such an amazing job on our makeup.
Becoming a cupcake was easily the best Halloween costume we’ve ever developed!

My daughter, Cate, is 15 months old and is STILL at that lovely age when you can dictate WHAT they will be for All Hallow's Eve, unlike her older 4 year old brother, HA! So, there were SOOO many cute costumes that I had in mind for her/us. However, when I received Pottery Barn's Fall Issue in the mail, advertising their Cupcake Costume, I FELL IN LOVE! TOO CUTE! But, their smallest costume size was a 2T which would NOT work for my girl, OR me! But I knew that I had found our costume idea and so, I totally ran with it!
I had some old tutus in our Halloween Dress-Up Tote that I decided to vamp up and use as the frosted pink "Top-Part" of our Cupcakes, which I embellished with confetti, (I cut out circles from felt, which I then hot-glued sporadically onto the tutus). I used a white "tennis skirt" as our Cupcake Wrappers.
My daughter had the CUTEST pink and white leg warmers to keep her legs warm for the Trick-or-Treating festivities! I then topped us off with a single birthday candle headband! Underneath, my daughter had a cupcake embellished on her bloomers! It was truly such fun to make our Homemade Birthday Cupcakes Costumes! My husband dressed up as "The Baker"!
I made this Handmade Cupcake and Jimmies Costume based on the Pottery Barn Kids costume which was selling for $60! I didn’t want to spend such an amount on a costume that probably wouldn’t even fit.
So, I decided to hand make my own variation of the costume. For the accessories and finishing touches, a sewing-machine and hot glue were also used.
First, I bought yardage of felt online in light pink and brown. I made a rough estimate as to how wide I wanted the diameter of the ‘icing’ to drape outward and to the skirt length/volume of the ‘ripples’ for the cup. The rest, thereafter, was just a question of taking things in to fit perfectly.
Felt is a very forgiving fabric and was so much fun to work with! I topped off the ‘icing’ with an array of complimentary colored jimmies to complete the ensemble. Lastly, I created a fabulous headband with a giant, bead-adorned strawberry, whipped cream frills and a white ribbon burst for a touch of girly-charm.
