Homemade Cupcake Halloween Costume

Homemade Cupcake Halloween Costume

I use my nieces and nephews for inspiration. This niece told me she wanted a Homemade Cupcake Halloween Costume for Halloween. I went to Walmart, got a cart, and cruised the aisles looking for anything that could become a cupcake.

A round laundry basket served as the cake holder. My husband sawed the bottom off and I used a power drill to make holes along the sides to attach the pleated “foil”. The “foil” cupcake holder is one of those folded things you put in your car’s front windshield to keep the sun out. Four inch plastic cable ties were threaded through the holes in the windshield thingy, into the bucket and cinched tight. Wide elastic was threaded through the rope handles and sewn end to end to form criss-cross suspenders.

The fluffy cake is a doughnut pillow made by sewing pink satiny material to pink gauzy material, shaping it and stuffing it with fiberfill. This goes over her sweet head and fits on the bucket, arms over pillow. A non-stuffed shawl of the same material covers her shoulders and neck. The “sprinkles” are round foam cut outs tacked with thread onto the “frosting”.

The hat had several incarnations. The pink “dollop of frosting” is an inverted paper bowl covered in same pink material. This was tacked onto the “cherry”, which is read pleather sewn from oval-ish strips, think of the fanned out pictures of the globe we all saw in elementary school. A hole was left in the middle for the “candle”, which is a paper towel roll, also covered in material.

The “flame” is a round battery operated gadget supplied by my sister-in-law. Material covered elastic was finally (FINALLY!!) tacked onto the paper dollop with Velcro at the ends to strap under her chin.

 Homemade Cake Halloween Costume

Homemade Cake Halloween Costume

I am the owner of a small specialty cake shop and thought it would be great fun to have my daughter dress as a wedding cake for Halloween.
I constructed the Homemade Cake Halloween Costume of soft foam wrapped around foamcore boards hollowed out to fit her body. Her arms stuck through the sides and her head out the top. I then wrapped it all in white fleece layer by layer.

I decorated the cake with silk flowers, lots of bling, rick-rack, ribbons, strings of pearls, and spray on glitter. Everything was attached with massive amounts of Gorilla glue. I added battery operated lights to it.

The top was a stack of Styrofoam dummies with a cake topper on top, decorated again with fleece, etc. I attached it to her head by again having it hallowed out than added an elastic strap around her chin.

For Halloween my hubby and I dressed as a bride and groom and brought our cake knife along for fun.

Homemade Baby Cupcake Costume

Homemade Baby Cupcake Costume

We wanted our 7 month old daughter to be a cupcake for her first Halloween. But, since she’s so young and would be in a stroller for much of the occasion, I decided to turn her stroller into a giant cupcake as part of her Homemade Baby Cupcake Costume.

She is wearing a knitted cupcake hat, she has a bling-cupcake that I ironed onto her shirt and another on her pants (on the butt).

I made the base of the stroller cupcake from cardboard, covered with cellophane folded like pleats, tape and zip-ties. The frosting is white satin cloth rolled up with batting inside. The cherry is a Styrofoam ball covered with cellophane and a green pipe cleaner for the stem. Finally, large jewel brads make up the sprinkles.
