Dad was a black fly - his costume was old panty hose- around bent wire- I cut two holes in a black t-shirt so under the shirt the wires were twisted together so I didn’t have to strap on his wings and they were really easy to wear. To add a cool effect there is iridescent see-thru tissue paper underneath the panty hose to give it a shimmer. Then I put the wing details on with silver nail polish. And he wore his normal sunglasses for the perfect touch.
Mom was a butterfly- but the wings were kinda like a cape. Huge piece of felt cut out as a wing shape- then I cut out the colors where I wanted them to be and used fabric glue to put the splashes of colors in the wings. I also made it really long and put stick on the ends so I could easily grab them when they were hanging and then fan it out! It was awesome. And crazy colored eye makeup with lots of little black dot designs made with liquid eye liner.
Our little baby was a stink bug. His shell was made out of paper mache. Then I used metallic paint to do the shell design. Just crawled and moved around like normal. But the best part was we had his own theme song. The Ugly Bug Ball. It was perfect because the chorus is “gonna crawl, gonna crawl, gonna crawl- to the ugly bug ball…”. So I played our music for everyone at all the parties we went to. Everyone loved it- and how cute for a little baby to be a stink bug! It was a BIG hit!
So our little man went as a Stink Bug! The homemade Stink Bug baby costume was super simple to make. I made the back shell out of paper mache. Just blew up a balloon about the size of my baby’s back. Then I made an outline of the shell and just did paper and glue. Then I got metallic paint and painted it. Looked up pictures of bugs online so I could make a cool design.
I thought green stink bugs looked cool- but I would suggest a different color- at first glance if people didn’t look at the design they thought he was a turtle. I added two straps so it crossed across his chest- duct taped the straps to the shell then they had snaps on the end to open or close it. It came off and on super easy so he could easily ride in the car and get a diaper change if needed. He didn’t even know he was wearing it. Just crawled and moved around like normal.
For his clothes I just put him in all black. But the best part was he had his own theme song. The Ugly Bug Ball. It was perfect because the chorus is “gonna crawl, gonna crawl, gonna crawl- to the ugly bug ball…”, so I played his music for everyone at all the parties we went to. Mom dressed up like a butterfly and Dad was a black fly- so we were all the “Ugly Bug Ball”. Everyone loved it- and how cute for a little baby to be a stink bug! It was a BIG hit!
Our family went as bugs. Praying Mantis, Ladybug, Butterfly, Bumble Bee & Firefly. All of the bug costumes ( except for the wings) were homemade.
I was the firefly. You can't see the back of the costume but I used a white balloon with glow sticks inside for my bum light. Then just used sticky Velcro to attach it. It looked great at night.
My daughter is the one in the wheelchair. Her nickname is Doodlebug so of course she had to be the ladybug. I just made a balloon style dress with elastic in the hem and added felt dots. We stuffed our costumes with grocery bags so it was light weight.
My nephew is the praying mantis. The head was constructed out of foam and polar fleece. The eyes are Styrofoam balls covered with fleece and painted black dots.
We added the large sun glasses (partycity) because we thought that gave just the added touch. My niece is the beautiful butterfly. She made a gorgeous black dress that could be worn other times (thinking ahead) and made her antennas out of Styrofoam balls with spray glue and glitter.
We hope you enjoy our creations . We sure did! Happy Halloween!
