Coolest Black Swan Costume - Black Swan Tiara before painting
Coolest Black Swan Costume - Completed Black Swan Tiara and Comb
This is my very first entry in this contest... I decided to create the Black Swan costume from the Natalie Portman movie. The movie was dark (not for everyone) but I was intrigued with the costume...
I bought pale pink ballet tights and canvas shoes which I sewed pink satin ribbons on them..
I purchased a black tutu and sewed them to my black dance shorts.. I added quite a bit more crinoline to make it stand out more like a real pancake tutu..
The top was made from an 80's dress that my aunt had.. it had a black satin plain bodice which I cut off the straps and then glued all the appliques, feathers and rhinestones by hand.. it was a time consuming process but well worth it :)
The tiara and back comb (again all handmade) were made from bendable wire which I molded clay around and let it dry and then painted it black and added a bit of glitter to make it more metallic looking and glued on the rhinestones.
I kept looking at reference pictures to make it look as authentic as possible including all the makeup..
Topped it off with the red contacts which really added to the costume!!
For Halloween this year, I went as the Black Swan from the Natalie Portman movie “Black Swan.” I absolutely loved the movie and I have wanted to dress up as a ballerina for Halloween for years.
I previously danced so I had some of the materials on hand. I used old pointe shoes, tights, and a tiara from previous performances. However, I did need to piece together the tutu from an old white leotard, a cruddy tutu that I beefed up with more tulle, and some lace. Plus, I had to dye the whole thing black, without a washing machine, so my mom and I dyed the pieces in bags in my tub!
My makeup for the night took 45 minutes and completely pulled the look together.
I almost won a costume contest but lost to a cross-dressed cat because it was more of a popularity contest than anything.
I had so much fun with this Homemade Black Swan Costume!
Yes... this was the coolest black swan costume!... The starting point was getting a simple corset and a tutu. Then we got lots of crystals of different sizes (or "bling" as I call it :)) and glued them one by one in a nice pattern on the corset and the tutu similar to the way Natalie Portman had it in the movie :).
The main features of the Black Swan Costume were the huge wings which we made from scratch at home! We used a foam board as the frame and traced the shape we wanted to cut. Then using hot glue we glued feathers in an orderly fashion to give an appearance of a flying swan! We used larger feathers at the bottom and then gradually the smallest ones till we reached the top.
We went to the NY city Halloween parade and this generated lots of looks!
I decided to do Black Swan this year since it's one of my movies. I got a black corset and sewed on feathers along the bottom and top right corner. I then added crystal beads to the left of the corset to make it look like the movie. I also added crystal beads to the left side of the tutu to get it as close to the original.
To complete the Black Swan look, I got some white tights and a black tiara. For the makeup I used a white cream based makeup all over my face to create the stoned look. Then I used black liquid eyeliner to draw the detailed eyes. I added silver shadow in between the black lines. I added red devil contacts to portray Natalie Portman's eyes in the movie. I also added a feather detail to my arm.
