DIY Cardinal Bird Kids Halloween Costume

DIY Cardinal Bird Kids Halloween Costume

My son loves the book 'My Mother is so Smart' by Tomie dePaola. In the book the boy says, "My mother is so smart she turned me into a bird for Halloween." When we asked Henry what he wanted to be for Halloween he said he wanted me to turn him into a bird for Halloween, just like the boy in the book. He said he wanted to be a red bird though. And so began the DIY Cardinal bird kids Halloween costume.

We started by looking for a bird head. We found the foam cardinal head at a rummage sale for a decent price and went from there. I took an XL fleece and sewed a crotch and leg holes into it and then put elastic around the leg holes. Next I added the black fleece for the bird tummy.

I sewed wing shapes of fleece to the sleeves and sides of the fleece and then began sewing the feathers on one at a time. I did a row of feathers and then a row of boa (which I purchased at the dollar store). We bought black tights for the legs and I made black shoe covers for his feet. He was very excited to be a red bird and loved flapping his wings from house to house for treats :)

My son wants to be a Cardinal for Halloween. The mascot for our local high school is The Cardinals and he thinks the mascot costume is cool. I would love more directions on how you made this costume (or I would be interested in buying your costume if you no longer use it)
Thanks.

My friends and I were trying to be different or at least make a homemade version of a popular costume and take it up a notch. My friends got a great idea to be peacocks and since I have to be different I decided to be a flamingo. In Pittsburgh the aviary is very popular thing to do on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

We bought our feathers and spent hours gluing them on our outfits. We also made head pieces. The peacocks made small clips since they had huge feathers. I made a mask so I could have the traditional Flamingo black hook nose with diamonds, glitter, and feathers of course!

Our Homemade Pittsburgh Aviary's Finest Birds Group Costume was a huge hit and everyone wanted to take pictures with us! (I don’t have a pic of it, but one of our guy friends who showed up late at the party was a bird catcher!)

Cockatoo Parrot Costume 8

Cockatoo Parrot Costume

Cockatoo Parrot Costume

I was inspired to make this costume after owning three cockatoo parrots and collecting tons of their beautiful white feathers. Zeus, my 50 year old Umbrella Cockatoo passed away last June so I dedicated this costume to him! I marched in the NYC Village Halloween Parade whose theme coincidentally was "Winged Creatures".

All the costume supplies were bought on eBay. I made the shoes by hot-gluing each feather on. I sewed feather trim on the collar and sleeves. The spandex suit was from an angel costume. The wings hold up the tail feathers which are real large white ostrich feathers. I even had feather tipped gloves, eyelashes and a large cockatoo crest on a white long wig. The beak was a cast prosthetic and they black eye contacts were added for a real bird effect!

Total Spent: $200

Unique and beautiful costume!
by: Tanya

Condolences on the loss of Zeus. I have owned several parrots and currently own a 13 year old Umbrella named Snowflake (a deceptively sweet name for a very shrewd bird).

Love, love, love this costume! Very clever!

Coolest Homemade Parakeet Costume

Homemade Parakeet Costume

Homemade Parakeet Costume

I started this Homemade Parakeet Costume by sewing a sort of potato sac type costume with an elastic at mid thigh and a hood. Then I proceeded to glue feather by feather the plumage of the parakeet. I wore a colorful striped pyjama pant and yellow dishwasher gloves over my shoes and glued a few boas down the backside to make a tail.

Then I did my makeup! It was a colorful comfortable costume though it took many many hours of glueing! Not to mention emptying all my neighborhood stores of their hot glue gun stick glue. I work in a daycare and the children had a great time petting me all day and listening to me make bird calls.
