Homemade Young Billy Mays Costume

My son, Kevin, age 8, wanted a Homemade Young Billy Mays Costume this year in honor of the late great Pitchman. He says that Billy Mays was a good advertiser with his great booming voice - and for our son, whom we are always having to tell to turn down his voice volume, this was one opportunity for him to say it loud and say it proud!

Kevin has blonde hair so we had to first dye it black/brown. We used a combination of Fanci-Full and black hairspray. We purchased a pirate beard online and extensively trimmed it to fit. The easy part is that all you need, apart from the great beard, is a dark blue button down shirt with a white t-shirt underneath, a pair of khaki pants and a can of OxiClean. We added an OxiClean logo to the shirt for good measure.

The best part was him handing out candy to the locals - give out one piece each and then say, "But wait! There's more" and give out a 2nd round of candy!

Since my son didn't have a blue shirt. He used my husband's, but he did have the khaki pants. White t-shirt underneath the blue one. Parted and styled his hair to the side. Painted a black beard with those Halloween make up kits. My husband had a silver heavy watch for him to wear.

For the logo, I didn't have any Oxy Clean products at home, so I went to the store and bought the Oxy Clean laundry tablets that are in a plastic zip lock bag. I took out all the tablets and cut the logo out. I then put several clear tape behind it for it to stick to his shirt. I also, bought the bottle for him to carry around he took pictures. It's all about props folks! He was in character all night - "Billy Mays here!" He won the funniest costume for his class!

Cost for this homemade Billy Mays costume: $6 for Oxy Clean products

Homemade Billy Mays Costume

I decided to dress up as Billy Mays a year ago, Halloween 2008. I got the idea channel surfing into the wee hours of the night and stumbling across numerous infomercials starring the one and only Billy Mays.

The Billy Mays Costume is quite simple. The only thing that was required is that manly grizzly Adams beard he had. So I grew mine out for a month, bought some "just for men" beard dye, and to top it all off I used regular face paint to fill in the skin spots to create the illusion of a fully grown black beard only Billy Mays could pull off.

The best part was that no one knew who I was, until I told them my name and busted out the Oxy clean. Needless to say, it was a good year for Halloween. Billy Mays will always be remembered.

I drew a beard on my son's face with eyeliner and filled it in completely. I bought a beard at a costume shop and cut off the hair and put it over the eyeliner (using a little bit of black make-up to make it stick) in pieces to give it a more authentic look.

I used printable iron on paper at Target and printed an Oxy Clean logo and ironed it on. The clothes were what he already had. This Billy Mays Costume was super easy and cool!

My husband grew out his beard for about a month. We dyed it a little darker with some beard dye. I used paint to make his Oxi Clean shirt and my cape. I wore yellow kitchen gloves. I took a blue shirt and cut a circle in it and painted around it with the yellow paint to make it stand out. My husband made a coozie out of a Oxi Clean canister. I took the Oxi Clean spray bottle and used it as an accessory.
