We wanted to do a family theme, so we decided on Sesame Street. My husband really wanted to wear a trashcan so of course he opted for Oscar the Grouch!

I started making the costume by paper maching a punching balloon. I then covered it in green furry fabric, cut out the bottom so his head could fit, cut out the mouth and inserted a piece of cardboard covered in black felt with a red tongue. I used Styrofoam balls for the eyes, black felt for the pupils, and covered them with furry brown fabric for the eyebrows. I cut out a small ¾” by 3” slit under the eyeballs so my husband could see.

For the body, I outlined the pattern of a long sleeve shirt and added a few inches so it was longer and bigger. I sewed it together to make a shirt.

For the trashcan, we used a Sawsall to cut out the bottom and covered the edges with duct tape so it didn’t pose a cutting hazard. We drilled two holes in front and two and back and attached nylon straps (webbing) covered in the fur which crisscrossed in the back. We used bolts and nuts to attach them through the holes.

As for the Big Bird dress, I bought furry yellow fabric and made a slip dress. I used a yellow boa around the top and bottom, and added feathers on the straps. I cut the head off a stuffed big bird and attached it to a hair clip, and added some more feathers. For the tights I got orange tights and used pink fabric paint to add the stripes.

My 2-year-old son went trick-or-treating as Elmo to complete our Homemade Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch Couple Halloween Costume Ideas!

Homemade Big Bird Costume

Last year was the first real year I could take my little boy trick or treating. I wanted to make my very first attempt at making his costume myself. One morning while watching Sesame Street, it came to me. And the Big Bird Costume was born.

I started out with just a plain zipper up hooded sweatshirt, to which I hot glued 3 bright yellow feather boas to. I cut the strips of feather boa to length for the sleeves and around the back and front. I also made a beak out of Styrofoam cone, and balls for eyes. I hot glued them to the top of the head.

I put my kiddo in some orange sweatpants, and cut out feet from orange felt and tacked them to his tennis shoes for an easy to walk in "feet".

Homemade DIY Big Bird Halloween Costume

Homemade DIY Big Bird Halloween Costume

This year my friends and I decided to all wear Sesame Street Muppet Jim Henson characters. I love Big Bird so the choice for a DIY Big Bird Halloween Costume was made! I made his head out of a beanie hat and a feather boa. Then I took a mask and painted it yellow and then painted two foam balls to make big birds eyes.

I wore a yellow shirt and yellow ruffle underwear that I covered with feathers. Underneath I wore orange tights that I painted pink stripes on.

The costume turned out great! We all had such a blast all night and people took pictures of us like we were celebrities!

I built this Big Bird costume in about three months. I used chicken wire for the body, a globe for the head and a piolon for the beak! I decided to make this costume because its just never been done right. Hope you like!

how did you make the eyes?

This is my title
by: Big bird....

The eyes were made out of a large Styrofoam balls cut in half and then painted

and it took me that long because I worked on it here and there and was just winging it without a real plan. As i went along I found new ideas. :)

how did you get the wire to stay on the body

I Used a furry/fluffy yellow fabric so it looked like feathers; and I attached it just buy sewing it to fit that shape and rolled it on.

the neck stopped it from going down and it was also pretty tight against the wire.

oh that's how it works. well could you send me some pictures or just make a diagram of how you made it? i understand what you are saying but its not enough info, so i don't mean to be annoying if i am, it's just that i've been wanting to make a costume like yours for a while but i've never come around to doing it. if you dont have pics or a diagram than could you send me a set of steps/directions used to make this big bird?

Big Bird Question
by: TheWebChroniclez

How did you use your chicken wire. Did you sculpt it in layers? Does it bend easily whenever you where the costume or does it bounce back? Oh and could you please send me the diagram/blueprint of how you made this because I'm planning to make a big bird replica myself.
