Homemade Bananas in Pyjamas Costume

Homemade Bananas in Pyjamas Costume

I had a costume party coming up for my work Christmas party and wanted to be the best dressed there so I decided to put together a Bananas in Pyjamas costume.

The 'head' of the costume was made with cardboard rolled into a tube. A balloon was then blown up and put in one end. Paper mache was applied to the whole thing to give it some strength. The best glue to use is wallpaper glue, can be found at hardware store.

To squish the mask, we cut slits in the sides and over lapped it a bit to give it more of a banana shape. Soft cotton stuff, like what stuffs in teddy bears and pillows was wrapped around and glued down, followed by yellow felt. Black felt eyes were applied. A mouth was cut out and then a piece of black material was glued from the black, which when close enough was able to see through.

A long white length of material glued around the edge with B1 on the front For the 'stalk' on the top, put cardboard tube (toilet roll) through another one and paint brown will do. Then jam that in the balloon part of the paper mache.

The pajamas were cut out of stripy material, just placed over clothes that already fit me and cut it out twice and sewed together. To give hoop look of the bottom part of shirt, Styrofoam tubing was threaded in.

I used yellow rubber gloves and some white shoes to top it off and you will be the life of the party!

Well I was, and got a bucket of alcohol for the effort!

Homemade Banana in Pyjamas Costume

Being from Australia, we don't really celebrate Halloween. This Banana in Pyjamas Costume was actually made by me for carnival in Holland, but now I'm living in Canada and I can't wait for my first real Halloween!

I wanted an original and Australian costume, and I was lucky enough to find the banana hat at a thrift store! From there it was quite simple – I bought the stripy blue and white fabric and made a pyjama top and bottom. I made shorts because the material was a bit expensive, and wore yellow tights and socks underneath as banana legs. I stitched 3 big white buttons to the front of the top and wore a yellow tank-top under the shirt too, as the neck was quite wide.

It was such an amazing costume. I loved how everyone would sing the theme song wherever I went, especially if I was on stairs!! I only needed a B2, as someone ate the banana I was carrying with me!

When my daughter, Sarah, was young she loved the kid's show Bananas in Pajamas"' and said to me she wanted to grow up to be a Banana in Pajama though she won't admit to it now, at 19 years old. So I was surprised in September when she showed me the cartoon picture of B1 and B2 and said that she and her girlfriend Taylor (they're always mistaken as sisters) wanted to be these characters for Halloween.

Before I knew it she had all the material purchased without buying the pajama pattern or an inkling how to make the costume. In addition to the cloth material she bought we also purchased the pajama pattern, 3/4 "foam and upholstery batting, screening and buttons. We have worked hard over the past month to have the costumes ready for Halloween. Sarah and Taylor love how their Bananas in Pajamas Couple Costume turned out and there won't be mistaking who they are Halloween night!
