This homemade baby optical illusion costume was a hit! This is an incredible optical illusion that will keep people staring at you for hours at a party trying to figure this out. It is a lot of fun. I promise you will get so many laughs.
The key to making the optical illusion REALLY work is to walk hunched over and slow, like the old woman would, yet your head looks around with the pacifier playing the part of the baby. People loved this. The old woman's head turns and looks around independently as I'll explain below.
Making it was very simple: I made the whole thing in an hour with safety pins and fabric batting, a $10 mask, and $7 worth of old clothes from the Salvation Army. The woman's mask is filled with batting and safety pinned to your shirt. The rest of the batting makes the hunch-back, and fills the baby outfit, which is also safety pinned to the costume.
Tip: Make sure the baby outfit is all one bright color, and the woman's clothes drab and also, one color. This accentuates the optical illusion and makes it look real. It is terrific how real this looks in person.
One of the best features was to run some hidden string up the sleeves, attach it to either side of the woman's head (hidden behind her hair). Pulling on the strings actually TURNS the woman's head independently. It is hilarious! This was too good and too much fun not to share!
Thanks for considering me in the contest! This was a blast to make and I hope others enjoy the laughs that will come from this.

Homemade Baby on Granny's Back Optical Illusion Costume
This Baby on Granny's Back Optical Illusion Costume was such a fun costume to make. I couldn't believe the amount of double takes my daughter received Halloween night. Unfortunately in our area there isn't any costume contests to enter but I felt it was a costume worth sharing with others.
You will need to find an old womans/mans mask (this will be your biggest expense). At your local thrift shop you can find a dress, shoes, a cane, a purse, socks or stockings, a turtle neck shirt, outfit for the baby, mittens or gloves, and a bonnet. You will also need to buy safety pins, a pacifier, batting to stuff the baby body and ribbon to sew to the collar of the baby's outfit. This way you can tie it around your neck to make it look more realistic.
First stuff your baby and either sew or hot glue the mittens to the outfit. Put on the dress and safety pin the old woman/man mask in place just below your chin. Stuff a small pillow or batting up the back of the dress to give yourself the appearance of a hunchback. This can be secured with a belt or actually using a stuffed backpack.
Secure the baby to your back with safety pins, tie the collar around your neck, put on your bonnet, suck on the pacifier, purse and cane in hand and be prepared for the questions to begin. Most importantly, have fun with it.

Homemade Mother and Baby Optical Illusion Costume
I got a lot of compliments on this Mother and Baby Optical Illusion Costume, and double-takes, with this costume. I bought a dress from a thrift store and cut a hole in the back for my torso. The rest of the dress was stuffed with newspaper and a curtain rod supported the head and shoulders of the "mother". I made the head out of paper-mache and pinned a wig and glasses on it.
To support the dummy, I had a belt on around my waist to keep the curtain rod against my body. The baby's legs are also filled with newspaper and the socks are pinned on. The baby's pants are tucked into the dress and the white shirt I'm wearing was long enough to cover it up and look pretty real.
