Ever since I saw the movie Avatar I was hooked... I ended up watching it 5 times in the theater. So, I've been waiting a long time to dress up as an Avatar, seeing as it came out the end of 2009. Finally, October came around & I didn't really have much time to plan the costume, so I decided to make it myself.

I got a bunch of blue face paint (which can be used on your body), some white paint to make different shades of blue, glow in the dark face paint, black hair spray, and two shades of metallic blue eye shadows. I also got yellow contacts and some different materials to make our "clothes". It took a lot of convincing to get my boyfriend to paint himself as an Avatar with me, but it wouldn't have been the same, I needed my greatest accessory, another Avatar =)

This DIY Avatar couple Halloween costume idea ended up being a messy costume to make, the blue paint & black hair spray ended up all over my bathroom, my CAR, and all over the party we went to. It did not matter to me because EVERYBODY loved our costume, especially us. My boyfriend ended up enjoying being an Avatar just as much as I did. We got so many compliments (such as "best costume of the year") that I decided to enter us into a costume contest online.

It took a lot of hard work and we had so much fun being Avatars. Nobody recognized us, except our families that saw the process. Hope you enjoy our pictures & story as much as everybody else did. Happy Halloween.

It took us about 3 hours to get our costumes on the second time around. We painted ourselves with body paint, mixing teal and dark blue for the base and painting our stripes on with just dark blue. I made my loin cloth and top with a fake leather material and he bought khaki pants and a khaki shirt. We made all of our own jewelry.

We bought Avatar wigs as well as Avatar noses and ears. We cut the noses to fit us and attached them with spirit glue and did the same with our ears. Then we painted our faces with the same paint we used on our body. We also purchased “Avatar” contacts to give us the yellow Avatar eyes. For my tail I purchased the women’s Avatar costume and just cut the suit so that it was just basically a pair of shorts with a tail on it. For his tail I used one of the legs from the body suit and sewed it, then stuffed it with quilt stuffing rolled up and cut part of the bottom of our wigs for the fur at the end.

And I think that’s about it! This Homemade Avatar Couple Halloween Costume Idea was such fun and I don’t know what we will do to top it next year!

After seeing Avatar my daughter decided she MUST be a Na'vi Princess for Halloween. This homemade childs Avatar Na'vi costume was fun to make.

I hand-painted tights and a leotard with two shades of blue fabric paint for the stripes. I made the tail from floral wire and wrapped it with the sheet style stuffing and then wrapped that in blue duct tape and painted it. This process allowed me to make the tail bendable and sturdy. I then attached it to the leotard. I made a dress out of an old shirt she had and hot glued fabric strips to the bottom and feathers over one sleeve to make it look more “native”.

I braided her hair and added feathers and some primitive jewelry I made to top it off. The ears are just a piece of blue foam board (50 cents at the craft store) that I cut and attached into her ear with bobby pins.

This homemade childs Avatar Na'vi costume was a fun outfit to make and it was a hit at her school Halloween party!
