For Halloween this year, I had a Red Queen from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland Girl's Costume Idea to do as a family theme. I was the White Queen and my 3 year old daughter was the Red Queen of Hearts. It looked so good since she is small, we were able to get the sizes pretty close.

To make her dress I started with a standard Queen of Hearts costume from Wal-Mart. Since those usually look cheap though, I added a few more things to improve on it. I sewed lace along the edges and around the collar. I also added lace across the bust and some metal embellishments (like for making jewelery). Then I got an adult size curly pony tail wig (the kind that are just supposed to go over a pony tail) An adult one was necessary because the red queen has a huge head, and this (on my daughters small head) made it look like her head was bigger than her body. Since I could only find regular colored ones, I sprayed it with temporary spray of bright red color. Then when I had it in her hair, I sprayed her real hair (brown) with the red.

I used white foundation on her face and then blue eye shadow. To look more like the movie, I colored in her real eyebrows with the blue shadow and drew pencil thin eyebrows, higher up. You also have to make the lips white and draw a heart over her mouth.

Top is all off with a crown, scepter, white tights and fancy shoes and that's all you need.

Homemade Do it Yourself Alice in Wonderland Costume

This Do it Yourself Alice in Wonderland Costume was one of my first sewing projects. I put many hours of time and love into it. I had a hard time finding a cute costume online or in the stores, and they are so expensive! My daughter wanted to be Alice, and only Alice, and wanted mommy to make it, so mommy did.

I found the perfect color blue at Joanns, and we were off, it took two weeks of an hour or two a day working on it, from the cutting of the pattern, to the very last stitch.

She was precious and made it so worth all of the time and work put into it. I think that homemade costumes are so much more fun, and really show the creativity, and imaginations of the children and parents. I encourage all parents to try to make their costumes, it is a great time to spend time with your children teaching them the process, and to show them just how much you love them, by doing something for them and giving them your time. There is no costume store bought that gives that!

Coolest Alice in Wonderland Costume 8

Homemade Alice in Wonderland costume

Once upon a time, there was a 47-year-old man who wanted to have some fun for Halloween. So, on a whim and a prayer, he decided to dress up as Alice in Wonderland. He had some help from his mother and because the poor sewing machine broke down, she had to hand sew this blue dress and apron.

Meanwhile, there were some internet finds for the rather large (size 12) Mary Jane shoes, bloomers, blond wig, headband and bow, and an unseen crinoline underskirt as well.

For the last two years, his costume was fun to wear looking like she had burst from the White Rabbit's house after eating one of those cookies, plus the handing out of bottles of juice with the words "Drink Me" labled on them around the corner from a haunted porch that was done by some crazy (in a good way) neighbors.

The moral of the story, always have fun every year and be good to the neighbors.
